Anfield, Liverpool
Sunday 25 October, 2pm
Liverpool host Brighton at Anfield on Sunday, kicking off at 2pm looking for a first league win at home this season against a side that leads the Premier League's scoring charts with 23 goals in seven games.
Andoni Iraola's Liverpool are fifth on 12 points after two draws and a 3-0 defeat by Manchester City from their three home games, while Fabian Hurzeler's Brighton are third with 16 points after winning their last four league games without conceding.
Liverpool vs Brighton preview and form guide
At Anfield, Liverpool drew 2-2 with Nottingham Forest, played out a goalless stalemate with Fulham and lost 3-0 to Manchester City, a game in which Ryan Gravenberch was sent off in the 62nd minute.
Away from home it has been different, with the Reds boasting the best record in the Premier League on their travels thanks to a draw with Newcastle United at St James' Park, alongside victories over Ipswich Town, Bournemouth and Brentford, though the 2-1 triumph over the Bees required a turnaround against 10 (and later nine) men.
In the Champions League, Liverpool ran out deserving 6-3 winners away to LASK Linz on October 14, when Bradley Barcola opened his Reds account with a first senior hat-trick, before building on that success by coming from behind to beat Villarreal 4-3 at Anfield on Tuesday.
Alexis Mac Allister scored twice in that comeback and Wirtz, introduced at half-time, added the fourth, which took Liverpool to nine points from their first three Champions League games.
Iraola's side have five days between the Villarreal game and Sunday while Brighton have three after Jablonec, and the manager is likely to restore Florian Wirtz, Barcola and Alexander Isak to the XI after they started on the bench in midweek.
Brighton had not won four league games in a row without conceding since November 2016, when they were in the Championship, until last Sunday's 5-0 victory over Crystal Palace.
Three goals inside the opening 10 minutes, including a 51-metre strike from Diego Gomez, ended the Palace game as a contest, and Charalampos Kostoulas added a fourth shortly after half-time.
The 19-year-old has netted three league goals and provided two assists so far this season, with the strikes coming against Coventry, Arsenal and Palace, and he looks set to lead the line once again with Evan Ferguson and Stefanos Tzimas unavailable.
Hurzeler's side are also spurred on by Pascal Gross, who has three goals and four assists in the league, more direct contributions than any other Brighton player.
Thursday's 0-0 Conference League draw away to Jablonec ended a six-match winning run in all competitions, although the Seagulls made eight changes for the trip, and still mustered 26 shots.
Brighton have only suffered a single defeat on the road in the Premier League this season, 4-3 to Chelsea in their opener back in August, and have kept clean sheets in each of their last two top-flight away days.
The underlying numbers show that Sunday's visitors have scored 23 goals from just 14.9 expected goals, highlighting their clinical finishing, while Liverpool have nine from 10.9 xG.
It is also notable that Brighton have scored eight of their away league goals after half-time, netting just twice prior to the interval.
Team news and predicted lineups for Liverpool vs Brighton
Liverpool team news
Dominik Szoboszlai is ruled out after aggravating a hamstring problem and leaving the pitch after 32 minutes against Brentford, with Iraola mentioning he has not returned to training with the group.
Jeremie Frimpong is also sidelined by a hamstring injury and Conor Bradley is currently undergoing rehabilitation after his knee injury, so Ronald Araujo continues at right-back.
Gravenberch is available after serving the one-match ban that followed his red card against City and should partner Alexis Mac Allister in midfield.
Victor Munoz scored away to Brentford but missed training this week, and Iraola said it will be difficult for him to make Sunday, while Barcola is fit after training normally on Friday.
Cody Gakpo is back after missing two games with an ankle injury and is expected to start on the left, with Rio Ngumoha pushing for a place after providing two assists against Villarreal.

Brighton team news
Hurzeler will check Pascal Struijk in training before deciding whether he can return, while Yankuba Minteh and Mats Wieffer are both ruled out, although both are expected to be back for the two games against Man City next week.
Struijk is dealing with a thigh problem, and Hurzeler has warned that it could be exacerbated if he is rushed back.
Without Struijk, Luka Vuskovic and Lewis Dunk should start in central defence again, with Ferdi Kadioglu at right-back and Olivier Boscagli at left-back, as they did against Palace.
Further forward, Kaoru Mitoma, Ferguson, Tzimas and Femi Azeez are all unavailable, which keeps Kostoulas up top with Gomez, Yasin Ayari and Maxim De Cuyper in support.

Liverpool vs Brighton head-to-head record
Liverpool won the previous two meetings at Anfield, 2-0 in the league in December 2025 and 3-0 in the FA Cup in February this year, but Brighton triumphed 2-1 at the Amex Stadium on March 21.
Hugo Ekitike scored both goals in that December win and is not expected back until the end of the year after rupturing an Achilles tendon in April, and Liverpool's attack looks significantly different this time around.
Liverpool have come out on top in the last three league meetings at Anfield, and Brighton's only league win there came in February 2021.
Only one of the games in the bar above produced fewer than three goals, which suggests Sunday's clash could be an entertainer, although Liverpool's new head coach and the changes in both squads mean that history is context rather than evidence for this fixture.
