Who are the favourites to be relegated from the Premier League?

Hull City

Hull are the favourites to make the swift return to the Championship, according to all of our selected bookmakers.

The Tigers finished in sixth place in the second tier last season, and were only promoted through the play-offs.

It was a somewhat surprising finish for Hull, who ranked second-from-bottom in terms of expected goals conceded (xGC) and were not favoured to go up at the start of the campaign.

They have strengthened in the transfer market, but realistically they need to do much more business in order to give them the best possible chance of survival.

Current price range: 1/6 (Ladbrokes) to 1/4 (bet365). Best available: 1/4 bet365. Also, check out our bet365 betting site review.

Coventry City

Like Hull, Coventry are also favoured to go straight back down to the Championship.

The Sky Blues did win the second tier at a canter last season, and have made some astute signings, breaking their transfer record four times already this transfer window.

However, after a 25-year absence from the Premier League, it will be difficult for them to maintain their levels with the top flight being such a step up.

Coventry’s start could not get any tougher with an away trip to Premier League champions Arsenal, and so it would not be a surprise to see them struggle.

Current price range: 11/17 (BetMGM) to 4/5 (Ladbrokes). Best available: 4/5 Ladbrokes. Also, check out our Ladbrokes betting site review.

Ipswich Town

Ipswich could complete the set of all three newly-promoted sides being relegated from the Premier League.

It did not happen last season, with Leeds United and Sunderland not just surviving, but doing so comfortably.

However, there is still a sizeable gap in quality between the two divisions, and in recent seasons, all three promoted teams have gone down in the same campaign before.

Like Hull and Coventry, Ipswich have significantly strengthened in the transfer window, and are even ranked second-highest in terms of net spend at the time of writing, but it remains to be seen whether it will be enough to keep them up.

Current price range: 11/17 (BetMGM) to 5/6 (Ladbrokes). Best available: 5/6 Ladbrokes.

Sunderland

Outside of the newly-promoted teams, Sunderland are the most fancied by our selected bookmakers to go down.

The Black Cats achieved a phenomenal season in 2025/26, qualifying for European football in seventh place after just getting promoted.

However, with Europe now to contend with, Sunderland could see their form dip in the Premier League with the squad not used to short turnarounds and more games.

They have also been largely inactive in the transfer market, and while they strengthened well last summer, the Black Cats may need to bring in more players in order to best prepare the squad for a European campaign.

Other contenders

While the three favourites are all odds-on to be relegated, there are some other contenders to consider.

Crystal Palace (6/1) have European football to contend with which could alter their Premier League form, while Fulham (11/2), Leeds United (6/1) and Brentford (9/1) could also be outside candidates to go down.

Premier League relegation prediction / betting tip

  • Our picks: Hull City, Coventry City and Ipswich Town
  • Best odds: bet365, Ladbrokes
  • Reasoning: The gap between the Championship and the Premier League remains large, and so it would not be a surprise to see all three promoted teams go straight back down.
  • Main risk: Leeds United and Sunderland showed last season that newly-promoted teams can survive under the right circumstances.

How does Premier League relegation betting work?

An outright bet on Premier League relegation is a single wager on which three teams will be relegated at the end of the season on 30 May, 2027.

The bet remains active until one or more of your selected teams have mathematically avoided relegation or when all three teams have been confirmed to be relegated.

Odds move in response to results, injuries, suspensions and overall market sentiment: a run of poor results for a team already fancied to go down will shorten their price, whereas a good spell of form could see the odds get longer in their favour.

Most major bookmakers, including all five listed in the table above and many new UK betting sites, offer cash-out functionality on outright bets during the Premier League season, which can be used to reduce exposure if a team enters a particularly difficult part of the draw.
