France and England meet at the Hard Rock Stadium on Saturday evening for the World Cup 2026 third-place play-off, a fixture that pits Kylian Mbappe against his Golden Boot rival Harry Kane. Both sides fell at the semi-final stage, France losing 2-0 to Spain in Dallas and England beaten 2-1 by Argentina in Atlanta after conceding twice in the final six minutes, and a bronze-medal finish now represents the last available prize.

The head-to-head record between these two European heavyweights stretches back more than a century, and their most recent meeting at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar produced one of the knockout stages' most memorable matches. Among the World Cup bookies, France are slight favourites for Saturday's encounter given their superior tournament record and the individual brilliance of Mbappe, though England possess the firepower through Kane and Jude Bellingham to make this a competitive affair.

Didier Deschamps' side arrived at this tournament with the third-best FIFA ranking in the world and proceeded to justify that billing in emphatic fashion through the group stage. France dispatched Senegal 3-1, Iraq 3-0 and Norway 4-1 to top Group I with nine points and 10 goals scored, the kind of dominance that fuelled talk of a first World Cup title since 2018.

The knockout rounds demanded more from France, but they responded with composure. Sweden were swept aside 3-0 in the round of 32 before a narrow 1-0 victory over Paraguay and a controlled 2-0 win against Morocco confirmed their credentials. Mbappe's eight goals in seven appearances place him level with Lionel Messi at the top of the scoring charts, though Messi leads the Golden Boot race by virtue of having more assists.

Spain's semi-final victory exposed the one sustained weakness in France's campaign. Mikel Oyarzabal converted a first-half penalty and Pedro Porro doubled the lead on 58 minutes as the Spanish midfield duo of Rodri and Fabian Ruiz nullified France's transition game. It was the second match of the tournament in which Mbappe failed to score, after the group-stage win over Norway.

The defensive record across the competition remains impressive, however. France have conceded just four goals in seven matches, with three clean sheets in their last four outings, a record that compares favourably with every remaining side in the tournament.

Michael Olise has been a quietly influential figure operating in central areas, accumulating a tournament-high five assists. Saturday's play-off will be Deschamps' final match in charge of France, adding a valedictory dimension to the occasion for the manager who has led the nation to two World Cup finals.

England's route to the semi-finals was defined by resilience rather than dominance. Thomas Tuchel's side won the group with seven points from matches against Croatia (4-2), Ghana (0-0) and Panama (2-0), before the knockout rounds tested their character in every conceivable way.

Kane produced a second-half brace to overturn a deficit against DR Congo in the round of 32, while the round of 16 saw England survive Jarell Quansah's red card against Mexico to win 3-2 at the Estadio Azteca, with Bellingham contributing two of those goals. In the quarter-finals, Bellingham scored twice as England beat Norway 2-1 after extra time at the very Hard Rock Stadium that will host Saturday's match.

The semi-final against Argentina offered the starkest illustration of England's strengths and limitations. Anthony Gordon's 55th-minute goal looked sufficient until the final minutes, when Enzo Fernandez equalised on 85 minutes and Lautaro Martinez struck the winner in the 91st minute. Tuchel's decision to protect the lead rather than press for a second goal drew considerable post-match scrutiny.

Kane and Bellingham have each scored six goals in the tournament, accounting for 12 of England's 14 total. That concentration of offensive output is both a strength and a vulnerability, and France's defensive unit will be well aware of the need to limit supply to the pair.

The physical toll on England is not insignificant. Tuchel's squad played 120 minutes against Norway in the quarter-final and suffered a psychologically damaging late collapse against Argentina, all within the space of four days. France, by contrast, were beaten cleanly by Spain and have had the simpler emotional recovery.

The view from England

It's the game no-one wants to play in, and that will be especially true for England given the heartbreaking manner of their semi-final defeat to Argentina.

A place in only a second ever World Cup final was there for the taking, but it was the same old story as an overly-cautious approach after taking the lead in a big game ultimately cost them.

Losing so late is difficult to pick yourself up from at the best of times, but especially for a game like this, which many consider meaningless.

England lost the third-place playoffs after their previous two semi-final defeats in 1990 and 2018, and even before taking the quality of their opponents into account, I expect the same again on Saturday.

France will be similarly disappointed, of course, but they never really turned up against Spain and couldn't have too many complaints at going out, whereas for England it was within touching distance and they shot themselves in the foot when it mattered most.

It's the hope that kills you, and the England players and fanbase will have every reason to be utterly deflated ahead of this game.

Victory would see 2026 go down as England's second-best World Cup ever, which is perhaps a shred of motivation to grasp onto, but it would be scant consolation for what might have been.

Under assessment

William Saliba is the only confirmed absentee for France, having been ruled out of the tournament through injury. Brice Samba is listed as doubtful but his absence would not alter the starting lineup, with Mike Maignan an established first choice in goal.

Deschamps did emerge from the Spain defeat with a fresh injury concern, with Saliba sustaining the injury that has ruled him out of the tournament during that semi-final, and has had four full days to prepare for his final match as France manager. Mbappe is expected to start despite the disappointment of the semi-final, given the Golden Boot race with Messi adds individual motivation to the fixture.

Ibrahima Konate replaces the injured Saliba alongside Dayot Upamecano in central defence, with Maxence Lacroix providing cover from the bench, while Warren Zaire-Emery, Bradley Barcola and Rayan Cherki are unlikely to start. The attacking quartet of Desire Doue, Ousmane Dembele, Olise and Mbappe should remain largely intact given the Golden Boot stakes.

Jordan Henderson is ruled out through injury, while Reece James and John Stones are both under assessment and have been monitored by the medical staff since before the semi-final. Bellingham is the subject of a potential FIFA investigation following an alleged incident with Argentina's Valentin Barco after the semi-final, though no sanction has been announced.

The emotional and physical toll of the Argentina defeat weighs on selection. Tuchel must balance the desire to end the campaign positively with the reality that several players have accumulated significant minutes through extra-time and high-intensity knockout matches. Dan Burn and Nico O'Reilly, both used as substitutes against Argentina, could earn starting roles if Tuchel opts for rotation. Several new bookmakers have already priced this match, with France slight favourites in the bronze-medal fixture.

Kane and Bellingham are expected to start regardless of any rotation elsewhere, with both chasing individual milestones. Bukayo Saka, Gordon and Morgan Rogers should complete the attacking setup in a 4-2-3-1 formation.

England hold a significant historical advantage in this fixture, winning 17 of the 32 meetings between the two nations against 10 defeats and five draws. That dominance extends across more than a century of competitive and friendly encounters dating back to 1923.

The most recent meeting at the 2022 World Cup quarter-final in Qatar ended in France's favour, 2-1, in a match remembered for Kane's missed penalty in the second half that would have levelled the scores at 2-2. That was only the third time the two sides had met in a World Cup, following group stage fixtures in 1966 (England won 2-0) and 1982 (England won 3-1).

Saturday's encounter will be the first third-place play-off between France and England. France have won bronze twice before, in 1958 and 1986, while England have lost both of their previous third-place matches, to Italy in 1990 and Belgium in 2018. All the major UK betting sites are pricing France as narrow favourites for Saturday's fixture.

Our France vs England prediction and tips

Top Tip
Kylian Mbappe anytime scorer
1.83
Mbappe has scored in five of his seven World Cup 2026 appearances, with eight goals placing him level with Messi at the top of the scoring charts. Saturday's play-off represents his final opportunity to take the Golden Boot outright, and Deschamps' last match in charge provides additional motivation for the captain to deliver. Coral are among the bookmakers offering this market for the third-place play-off.
Value Bet
Over 2.5 match goals
1.50
England have not kept a clean sheet in any of their four knockout matches. France have scored at least two goals in five of their six victories at this World Cup. Third-place play-offs historically produce open, attacking football with reduced tactical conservatism.
Longshot
Correct score: France 2-1 England
9.50
France's defensive record of three clean sheets in four outings before the Spain defeat suggests they can limit England, while Kane and Bellingham possess the quality to find one reply. The 2022 World Cup quarter-final between these two sides finished 2-1 in France's favour in similar circumstances.
Free Choice
Both teams to score
1.44
England's four knockout games have all seen both teams score, a pattern that reflects their attacking talent and defensive vulnerability in equal measure. France have conceded in three of their seven tournament matches, including against Senegal and Norway in the group stage.
Prediction
France 2-1 England
France's superior defensive record and Mbappe's pursuit of the Golden Boot make them marginal favourites for a third-place play-off where individual milestones will drive motivation as much as collective pride. England have the talent to score through Kane and Bellingham, but accumulated fatigue from extra-time and late heartbreak against Argentina may leave Tuchel's side a step behind their fresher opponents in Deschamps' farewell match.
  • France kept three clean sheets in their last four outings before the semi-final defeat to Spain
  • Mbappe has scored eight goals in seven World Cup 2026 matches, level with Messi though Messi leads the Golden Boot by assists
  • England have seen both teams score in all four of their knockout matches at this tournament
  • Kane holds 14 career World Cup goals, tied with Gerd Muller as the fifth-highest scorer in tournament history
