Brentford host Tottenham at the Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday evening, with both London clubs arriving from very different points in their rebuilds as they look to get their respective 2026-27 Premier League campaigns under way.
Keith Andrews goes into his second season on the back of an impressive campaign, while Roberto De Zerbi will hope to build on the great escape that kept Spurs up on the final day of the last one.
Brentford vs Tottenham form and preview
Brentford's ninth-placed finish last season was their joint-highest since returning to the top flight in 2021-22, though the Bees will still wonder what if after missing out on a first European campaign by goal difference alone.
That near miss was made harder to take by a stuttering run-in, with Andrews's side winning just once in their final 10 league matches as their form fell away at the worst possible time.
The campaign eventually petered out with a heavier 3-0 defeat away at Manchester City, followed by back-to-back draws, 2-2 against Crystal Palace and 1-1 at Liverpool.
None of that has carried into the summer, though, with the west Londoners suffering only a solitary defeat to Watford before winning their next four friendlies, closing out their preparations with victories over Rennes and a resounding 7-0 demolition of Eintracht Frankfurt in front of watching crowds.
Record signing Mamadou Sangare got on the scoresheet in that Frankfurt rout and looks set for his top-flight debut, one of several additions alongside Callum Wilson and Jaidon Anthony as Andrews looks to add depth to an already settled squad.
Tottenham's 17th-placed finish was their second in a row in the bottom half of the table, a campaign that only ended in safety when Joao Palhinha's goal sealed a 1-0 win over Everton and sent West Ham down instead.
That great escape came against a backdrop of serious upheaval behind the scenes, with Thomas Frank sacked in February and Igor Tudor's 44 days as caretaker doing little to arrest the slide before De Zerbi arrived in March.
The Lilywhites have since enjoyed an unbeaten pre-season, winning four of seven matches and drawing the other three, a run that included a 2-1 win over Chelsea in the Sydney Super Cup before a 3-0 victory and then a 2-2 draw against Hoffenheim closed out the summer.
De Zerbi's side have matched that momentum in the transfer market, breaking their club record fee twice in the space of days for Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes at a combined £185m, while Andy Robertson arrived on a free transfer and Cristian Romero departed for Atletico Madrid.
With both squads reshaped so heavily over the summer, punters weighing up the opening weekend will find no shortage of options among our best UK bookmakers for football betting.
Team news: Brentford vs Tottenham
Brentford
Aside from Antoni Milambo and Sepp van den Berg, Andrews has a clean bill of health to call upon, a rare luxury given how thin his options were for long spells last season.
Nathan Collins and Kristoffer Ajer are expected to continue as a central defensive pairing, with Michael Kayode and Keane Lewis-Potter occupying the full-back berths either side of them.
Sangare's arrival completes a settled central three alongside Vitaly Janelt and Mathias Jensen, while the front line of Dango Ouattara, Igor Thiago and Kevin Schade should stay unchanged after inflicting so much damage on Eintracht Frankfurt.
Tottenham
Tottenham have a long injury list, though they have no suspensions to contend with.
Micky van de Ven is a major doubt after missing the whole of pre-season following the World Cup and being absent from training this week, likely leaving De Zerbi to rely on his new centre-back pairing.
Jan Paul van Hecke and Marcos Senesi are consequently set to make their competitive debuts as a makeshift pairing, with Robertson starting at left-back and Archie Gray continuing at right-back ahead of Pedro Porro, who has only just returned to training following his World Cup exploits with Spain.
Fernandes has trained fully this week after a fitness scare of his own and should partner Tonali in a deeper midfield two, a shift that pushes Conor Gallagher further forward in support of Richarlison.
James Maddison is back from his cruciate injury but has been eased in gradually throughout pre-season, and De Zerbi looks set to keep faith with Gallagher and Mathys Tel rather than rush his playmaker straight back into the side.
