Cape Verde’s hopes of an unlikely entry into the World Cup’s knockout rounds will rest on the outcome of their third and final game against Saudi Arabia in the early hours of Saturday at Houston Stadium.
Sitting third with two points in Group H, Cape Verde will cement their current place with a stalemate, though three points would guarantee their progression. Saudi Arabia are fourth with one point, meaning anything other than a win will lead to their elimination. Those looking at the World Cup betting sites will find a market that reflects the Sharks' superior form, with Bubista's side unbeaten in five while conceding just three goals across that run.
Preview: Cape Verde vs Saudi Arabia
Cape Verde head into the weekend having avoided defeat in their last five matches, winning three and drawing two. They scored nine goals and only conceded three across that period.
Their impressive draws against Spain and Uruguay have defied expectations, particularly as their stalemate with the Spanish featured the biggest ever ranking gap between opponents in a World Cup game that did not end in the higher-ranked side winning (2nd vs 67th). The fact they were able to regularly threaten two-time World Cup winners Uruguay was also promising.
While the most important thing for the Sharks will be qualification, history is set to be made, with attacker Ryan Mendes likely to earn his 100th cap. The 36-year-old forward also ranks as his country’s highest ever scorer (22), and Saturday’s game would be all the more memorable should he net the winner.
Another player to keep an eye on will be goalkeeper Vozinha, who has made himself not only a national hero, but one of the standout stars of the entire tournament. The 40-year-old’s remarkable displays against Spain and Uruguay have earned him fame beyond anything he could have imagined, and he will need to perform miracles one more time.
However, the shot-stopper will still need his other stars to step forward and perform their defensive duties, with midfielder Kevin Pina set to play a pivotal role in a midfield three. It will be a bonus if he can score from a free kick again, with his 32-yard strike against Uruguay the longest range goal so far at this World Cup.
Saudi Arabia are at risk of elimination even if they draw as two points would not be enough to secure a place in the round of 32 as one of eight third-placed teams.
They also have struggled much more than Saturday’s opponents in recent matches, losing twice and only winning one of their last five games. Their 4-0 defeat to Spain in matchweek two of the World Cup was not necessarily unexpected given the quality that Spain possess, and it should be noted that they faced a fully fit Lamine Yamal.
Still, the Falcons have offered little threat in the final third for some time, with the nation failing to find the back of the net in two of their past four fixtures, yet they have also conceded at least two goals in four of their last seven outings.
Boss Georgios Donis will look to rely on the threat of Firas Al-Buraikan, who has 16 goals from 74 appearances for the national team. Though he has not had many opportunities in attack so far at the World Cup, he only needs to convert one chance to make the difference.
Saudi Arabian stars Mohamed Kanno and Nasser Al-Dawsari could be key to the attacker’s hopes of scoring, as a strong defensive base in midfield will help the team steadily advance up the pitch, but the side will look unbalanced if they struggle to control the middle.
Team news: Cape Verde vs Saudi Arabia
Cape Verde
Left-back Sidny Lopes Cabral has picked up two yellow cards so far at the World Cup, meaning he will serve a one-game suspension, so expect to see Joao Paulo fill in on the left side of defence.
Midfielder Jovane Cabral is also a slight fitness concern, and though he has not been ruled out of the weekend’s game entirely, it would be surprising if he made the starting XI due to the risk of exacerbating his injury.
The only other doubt for the game is Telmo Arcanjo, who was forced off the pitch against Uruguay. If he is unavailable as expected, then Deroy Duarte will likely be considered for a starting role in midfield, especially as he was the one to replace Arcanjo last time out.
Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabia fortunately have no injury concerns to report following the news that Hassan Al-Tambakti has recovered from a slight foot issue.
Donis is expected to persist with the five-man defence that he has used in both games at the World Cup so far, with Al-Tambakti, Abdulelah Al-Amri and Ali Lajami as the central trio and Moteb Al-Harbi and Saud Abdulhamid as wing-backs.
Salem Al-Dawsari and Firas Al-Buraikan are expected to start in advanced positions. With 43 international goals between them from a combined 187 appearances, they could represent Saudi Arabia's most dangerous attacking combination.

Head-to-head: Cape Verde vs Saudi Arabia
Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia have never met in an international fixture before, but their meeting on Saturday will be a significant one regardless, especially as it could be Cape Verde's final appearance at their first ever World Cup.
It could be significant for the Sharks as it could also be the match that they cement their place in the knockouts, and that would be a remarkable achievement for a nation with a population of under 700,000.
The last time that Cape Verde competed against an AFC side came in November 2025 – they drew 0-0 with Iran before losing on penalties – whereas Saudi Arabia’s previous encounter with a CAF opponent was a goalless stalemate with Senegal on June 10.
Saudi Arabia have more experience at the World Cup – and a higher FIFA ranking – but international ranking has not proven to be a hurdle for Bubista's side, and there is little evidence to suggest that they will be comfortably swept aside.
