But Pardew didn't stop there, saying something that will open him up to ridicule if today doesn't go to plan. "If Kane was in our team we'd be in the top four," was the quote. Brave words from a manager of a team who have failed to find the net in the league since before Christmas and were thrashed 4-0 by Man City last time out. Ego? Delusion? Or just self-confidence? Either way, that's Pards in a nutshell.

Alan Pardew loves a quote, so it's little surprise that he has been firing out some good'uns ahead of this London derby. "Spurs have the best goalscorer in the Premier League, in my opinion, in Harry Kane," was one such gem (although, in his defence, it can be easy to forget that Sergio Aguero exists).

The biggest relief for Spurs will be that they are playing somebody other than Leicester. The midweek 2-0 FA Cup victory over the Foxes ended Tottenham's run of three games in as many weeks against the Midlanders, but their performance and result in that game will have given manager Mauricio Pochettino greater confidence in some of the second string players in his squad.

This fixture was Alan Pardew's first game in charge of Palace last season and he emerged with all three points. However, that is one of just two wins for the south Londoners in their last nine meetings with Tottenham and they go into today's game still looking for a first league goal of 2016.
