Chloe Kelly ‘so proud to be English’ after sensational Euro 2025 triumph in shoot-out against Spain sees Lionesses go back-to-back

Chloe Kelly grabbed the winner in the 2022 European Championships against Germany, and she repeated the trick against Spain on Sunday in Switzerland. The England forward scored the winning penalty after a 1-1 draw, with Sarina Wiegman now winning the tournament three successive times, and the victory being England's first major tournament won away from home.

England forward Chloe Kelly said she was "so proud to be English" after her penalty won their Euro 2025 final in a shoot-out against Spain on Sunday in Switzerland.
England went behind in the first half when Mariona Caldentey struck on 25 minutes, but Alessia Russo equalised just before the hour mark for Sarina Wiegman’s team.
The match went to extra time and England needed to be on their toes defensively as they survived pressure from their dangerous opponents.
Goalkeeper Hannah Hampton saved two penalties, leaving Kelly to strike the winning spot-kick, for an insurmountable 3-1 lead.
Kelly had endured a difficult domestic season after being frustrated in her wish to leave Manchester City before eventually joining Arsenal on loan, with whom she won the UEFA Champions League against Barcelona
She joined Arsenal on a permanent deal before the Euros commenced, and focused on her England duties.
Speaking to the BBC after the win, she was full of pride about what she and her team-mates had achieved.
She said: "I am so proud of this team. So grateful to wear this badge. So proud to be English.
"I was cool, I was composed. I knew I was going to hit the back of the net. I don't miss penalties twice.
"Unbelievable. All the staff behind us and Sarina Wiegman - she has done it again. Unbelievable.
"It is going to be crazy. I hope the whole of England comes out to support us and shows their love to these girls as they deserve it."
For Kelly, it is another moment to savour in a European Championship final with England.
In the 2022 tournament, Kelly was the hero for the national team when Wiegman secured her first major title with the team.

For Wiegman it represents a third successive European title. The first came with the Netherlands in 2017, with the next two won in charge of England. She has also taken both countries to the finals of the World Cup, albeit losing both times.
For The Lionesses, they have become the first England side to win a major trophy on foreign soil. And as reported by the BBC, England are also the first side to win a one-legged European final having trailed at half-time.
England beat Germany in the final of Euro 2022, and Kelly was on hand to score her winner in the 110th minute in extra time, and three years later, she proved her big-game prowess even later on from the spot.

‘I lost track of what was going on’ - Hampton admits confusion

Goalkeeper Hampton echoed Kelly, and admitted she only knew that the trophy was England’s when she saw her team-mate tear off in celebration after converting her winning penalty.
"This team is unbelievable," she said. "Incredible. We can show we can come back from 1-0.
"I lost track of what was going on in that shoot-out, as soon as I saw her [Kelly] run off I knew we had won."
