Spain's women's national team have undergone a change of head coach, as the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) confirmed on Monday it has not renewed the contract of Montse Tome. The departing coach became the first woman to be appointed in the role after taking the reigns from Jorge Vilda in 2023. Under-23 coach Sonia Bermudez was appointed as Tome's successor.

The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) said on Monday it will not renew the contract of head coach Montse Tome following Spain's penalty shoot-out defeat to England in the Euro 2025 final.
Tome, who became the first woman to be appointed in the role following the dismissal of Jorge Vilda in September 2023, has been replaced by under-23 coach Sonia Bermudez.
World champions Spain were the favourites heading into the Switzerland tournament this summer, and won all their matches before being taken to a penalty shoot-out by Sarina Wiegman's England, in which the Lionesses triumphed 3-1 to defend their European title.
Tome was assistant to Vilda as Spain lifted the World Cup trophy following a 1-0 victory over England in Sydney two years ago.
The 43-year-old stepped up to the head coach role after Vilda was dismissed just a month after the tournament amid the Luis Rubiales scandal.
Despite failing to lead Spain to the European title, Tome still managed a trophy in her time as head coach, as her side claimed the 2023/24 UEFA Nations League trophy with victory over France in the final.
An RFEF statement issued on Monday read: "The Board of Directors of the Royal Spanish Football Federation would like to thank Montse Tomé for her work, professionalism and dedication in various roles during her time as a member of the national teams at the RFEF, especially during her time as the national team coach."

Tome's contract officially expires on August 31.
In the same statement, the RFEF confirmed Bermudez - who has twice won the U19 Euro in her coaching career - would take charge of the national team.
Bermudez won 63 Spain caps during her playing career, scoring 35 goals, while representing Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Western New York Flash at club level.

The former U23 coach's first task will be to attempt to guide Spain to consecutive Nations League titles.
After finishing atop Group A3, Bermudez's side face Sweden in a two-legged semi-final on October 24 and October 28. They will face either Germany or France in the final.
Should they retain their title, Spain would ensure they are the only name on the Nations League's winners list with their triumph under Tome coming in the tournament's inaugural edition.
