England's Hannah Hampton has revealed she tossed the notes of Spain goalkeeper Cata Coll into the crowd during the penalty shoot-out of the UEFA Women's Euro 2025 final. The Chelsea goalkeeper says she threw her opposite number's water bottle, which contained information on The Lionesses' penalty takers. The move paid off, with England going on to reclaim their European title.

Hannah Hampton has revealed she threw the notes of Spain’s goalkeeper into the crowd during The Lionesses’ penalty shoot-out victory in the final of UEFA Women's Euro 2025.
England defended their European crown last month after beating Spain 3-1 on penalties following a 1-1 draw, and Hampton was instrumental, saving two spot kicks in the shoot-out.
But her contributions did not end there, with the 24-year-old admitting she threw Cata Coll’s water bottle, which contained notes on England’s penalty takers, into the crowd.Â
The Chelsea goalkeeper told Talksport: "The Spanish keeper had it on her bottle. So I thought when she was going in goal, I’ll just pick it up and throw it into the English fans so she can’t have it."
Coll also managed to make two saves in the shoot-out, but was unable to stop the spot kicks of Alex Greenwood, Niamh Charles and, decisively, Chloe Kelly.Â

Following extra time, Hampton was seen rolling up her sleeve and taping a piece of paper to her arm, containing information on Spain’s penalty takers, and she has since revealed this was to prevent Coll disposing of her intel in the same way she did.
Hampton said: "I never put it on a bottle because anyone can do that, so that’s why I put it on my arm.
"It wasn’t hard, when she’s in the goal it’s on its own, isn’t it? You just pick it up."
To make the circumstances even more baffling for Coll, Hampton replaced the Spaniard’s bottle with an identical one, but without the all-important information.Â
The England goalkeeper said: "When she saw my bottle in there instead, mine’s blank but it has the same sponsors and stuff so I just put mine in there, chucked hers in with the fans and she had an empty bottle.
"She was walking back and I was walking the other way and she was so confused, I was trying so hard not to burst out laughing."

Discussing the preparation which went into England's penalty shoot-outs, Hampton explained: "Before the games, we as a [goal] keeper group have meetings and we analyse every penalty that each individual from the opposing team has had.
"I think Alexia [Putellas] had 46 penalties we had to sit there and watch, but all the players, even if they’ve only taken one penalty back in 2019.
"You’ll watch it and pick out little things they do, whether they go one side or the other or have little subtleties in their run-up or even their arm position.
"Then pressure penalties, where they tend to put them. You see all of that and then you see their run-up and adapt in the moment to it."

Hampton’s revelations come following her nomination for both the Women's Ballon d’Or and Yachine Trophy for the best goalkeeper.Â
On top of her heroics with England, the 24-year-old played a key part in Chelsea's domestic treble-winning season.
She has been nominated for the Ballon d’Or alongside England team-mates Leah Williamson, Lucy Bronze, Alessia Russo and Kelly.
The winners will be announced on Monday, 22 September in Paris.
