ENGLAND TRIUMPH ON PENALTIES TO BECOME BACK-TO-BACK EUROPEAN CHAMPIONS
Sarina Wiegman's indomitable Lionesses produced a Herculean effort to hold a star-studded Spain 1-1 over 120 minutes in the UEFA Women's Euro 2025 final, before Hannah Hampton saved two penalties in the shoot-out and Chloe Kelly fired home the winning spot-kick that saw England continue their reign as European champions.

Wiegman ‘incredibly proud’ of England after ‘most chaotic and ridiculous tournament’

Against the side who broke English hearts two years ago in the World Cup final, the match in Basel appeared to be following a similar script when Aitana Bonmati combined with Athenea del Castillo to set Ona Batlle free in the penalty area, and the full-back produced a fantastic cross for Mariona Caldentey to head past a helpless Hampton.
Spain controlled the rest of the first half but England were a different side after the break and Kelly, the super sub pressed into service earlier than usual when Lauren James could not continue, floated a pinpoint cross to Alessia Russo who hit the back of the Spanish net with an even better header.
Controlling possession for most of the game, Spain ran proceedings with the help of two-time Ballon d'Or winners Alexia Putellas and Bonmati, yet The Lionesses restricted their opponents to only a handful of chances and were good value for the 1-1 scoreline at full-time.
Extra time saw a similarly battling rearguard effort from England, who should have gone behind with 15 minutes to go when Salma Paralluelo had the chance to turn a low cross home from point-blank range but opted to try and backheel the ball, barely making contact.
So the final went to penalties, and England fans looked set for further heartbreak when Beth Mead's effort was saved by the superb Cata Coll to kick off the shoot-out and Patricia Guljarro did not make the same mistake.
But England's luck turned from there as Alex Greenwood and Niamh Charles scored their kicks while Hampton denied Mariona Caldentey and Bonmati to flip the tables.
Captain Leah Williamson also saw her effort parried but when Paralluelo slid her effort wide of the target, Kelly stepped up to ensure England remained Queens of Europe for another four years.

BRONZE: I PLAYED THE ENTIRE EUROS WITH A FRACTURED TIBIA
Yes, you read that correctly. The 33-year-old scored England's winning penalty against Sweden, played 120 minutes against Italy and was only forced off at half-time in extra time of the final with another injury.
And she just revealed to the BBC that she has had a fractured tibia for the whole tournament - the tibia is the larger bone connecting the knee to the ankle.
"I've actually played the whole tournament with a fractured tibia, but no one knew," Bronze said.
"And I've just hurt my knee today on the other leg. I think that's why I got a lot of praise from the girls after the Sweden game because I was in a lot of pain but if that's what it takes to play for England, that's what I'll do.
"They know that, I think we inspire each other by playing through things like that and it got us to the end."

WILLIAMSON: FELT LIKE IT WOULD BE OUR DAY
An emotional Leah Williamson spoke to the BBC's Alex Scott after the victory which made her a history-making England captain.
[How are you feeling right now?] "Just total disbelief, but at the same time I knew it was going to happen," Williamson said. "Playing for this England team is unbelievable.
[How did you know it was going to happen?] "I don't know, it's just such an amazing feeling to be a part of, there's always a moment where I think 'right girls, now's the time, let's turn it on' but as soon as it started, the way we defended as a back four especially but as a whole team, nothing came through us.
It just felt like it was going to be our day."
"Relentless, relentless, we've got players that just absolutely love it, they step up, I'm trying not to swear. It's unbelievable to do this again, this is the toughest, to win it again and how women's football has changed, we just did it.
"And after that first game, no one thought we would. And fair enough, but within us, nothing changed."
[You came into this one with a target on your back] "Yeah, the stakes, everything was higher. I feel like even when we won in '22 all the other teams were so happy for us. Today it's like no, we've ridden our luck, I don't think we're lucky and we've pulled up just at the right time."

HANNAH HAMPTON: SUPERSTAR
It is safe to say that any worries England had about the international retirement of Mary Earps have been assuaged.
After dominating the penalty area for most of the 120 minutes, the Chelsea star dived the correct way for all four of Spain's penalties, saving two of them and watching another flash harmlessly past her post.
That's after she dived the right way six out of seven times against Sweden and saved two once again.

WIEGMAN: VICTORY YET TO SINK IN
Asked by the BBC if the victory has sunk in yet, Wiegman said:
No, I can't believe it!
"The word team really describes who we are, a team. We say we can win by any means and that's what we showed again today. I'm so proud of the team and the staff, it's incredible.
[Has this been your hardest Euros triumph?] "It's been the most chaotic tournament, especially on the pitch. All the challenges we had on the pitch against out opponents, from the first game it was chaos and losing your first game and then becoming European champions is just incredible."

HAMPTON LOST FOR WORDS AFTER TRIUMPH
She saved two penalties and dived the right way for a third that flew past her post, and Hannah Hampton was rightly named Player of the Match in Basel.
Speaking to the BBC, she said:
[Have you got the words to describe what just happened?] "Erm, no. This team's just unbelievable, incredible. We've shown throughout this tournament when we go a goal down we can come back. We have that grit, we've got English blood in us so we never say die, we just keep going and we did that today."
[Do you remember much from the shootout?] "No, when Chloe stepped up I turned around to the fans and I was miming a kicking motion, like 'if she scores do we win?' because I'd completely lost track of what was going on.
"They kept just cheering at me and I don't know what the answer is but as soon as I saw her run-up I thought 'that's it, we've won'. I just can't believe it, I don't think it's going to sink in for a while."
[What did Sarina Wiegman say to you all before penalties?] "This is England, this is our moment. We've dug in for 120 minutes, we've done what we needed to do to keep Spain out, it was just one kick and that was it. We did that this time."
Better pens than the last one, let's be honest."

TWICE AS NICE
And there is the golden moment. All of the England players are sporting smiles a mile wide as Williamson walks up carrying the trophy. She knows what to do from here.
England have avenged the loss last summer in Berlin, the World Cup final defeat two years ago, and will be Queens of Europe for another four years.

THE LONG WALK
It is always tricky when a player from the losing finalist wins a tournament award, and Aitana Bonmati looks dejected as she walks up to receive her Player of the Tournament trophy.
The rest of the defeated Spaniards will follow to collect their medals. Meanwhile The Lionesses are not even watching, they are celebrating in front of their delighted fans.

CHLOE KELLY: I DON'T MISS PENALTIES TWICE
England's hero spoke to the BBC after the game and dropped one of the hardest quotes of the footballing year. After her extra-time penalty was saved against Italy, she reacted to hammer home the rebound and send England to the final, before giving Coll no chance.
"I'm so proud. So proud of this team, so proud to wear this badge and I'm so proud to be English," Kelly said.
[On her penalty] "I was cool, I was composed, I knew I was going to hit the back of the net.
I don't miss penalties twice.
[On the grit shown by the team] "Unbelievable, not just the team, all the staff behind us, 23 players and Sarina Wiegman, she's done it again!"
[On the celebrations] "It's going to be crazy, I hope the whole of England comes out to support us and shows the love to all these girls because they deserve it."

FULL-TIME: ENGLAND 1-1 SPAIN (3-1 ON PENALTIES)
Where to start with that then? Make no mistake, England were second-best for the majority of the game, were comfortably outshot by Spain and looked like they were playing for penalties from the start of extra time.
But none of that matters. England defended heroically and for all their possession, Spain could not fashion many more golden chances than their opponents.
Finally, England showed their mental fortitude, and how much they learned from that calamity from the spot against Sweden, to beat a star-studded Spanish side from 12 yards.
