Sarina Wiegman's five major international finals revisited as England avenge World Cup heartbreak against Spain with Euro 2025 triumph

Sarina Wiegman's England defeated Spain in the Euro 2025 final on Sunday, avenging their World Cup final defeat in Sydney two years ago. Indeed, Wiegman has now led England to three successive finals, having also reached the European Championship and World Cup final with Netherlands before taking charge of The Lionesses. Here is how her sides fared in each of those games.

Sarina Wiegman’s England side defeated Spain on penalties in the UEFA Women's Euro 2025 final.
The Lionesses needed an injury-time Michelle Agyemang strike and a 119th-minute Chloe Kelly goal to edge past Italy 2-1 and make it to their third successive major final under Wiegman, before a nail-biting shoot-out victory.
Indeed, it was the 55-year-old’s fifth major tournament final in a row, a record FA chief executive Mark Bullingham labelled as "phenomenal".
As a manager, Wiegman has also overseen victories in the Women's Finalissima against Brazil two years ago, and won three Dutch Cups with Ter Leede and ADO Den Haag.
Here is how Wiegman’s sides fared in those major international finals.

Euro 2017: Netherlands 4-2 Denmark

In 2017, Wiegman led Netherlands to their first Women's Euro victory and it was an eventful contest.
Denmark took the lead from the spot through Nadia Nadim after six minutes, but Vivianne Miedema levelled proceedings, before Lieke Martens fired the hosts in front midway through the first half.
Pernille Harder then made it 2-2 before the interval, only for Netherlands to reclaim their advantage through a Sherida Spitse free-kick.
Miedema then scored her second of the game in the 89th minute to secure an historic 4-2 victory for Wiegman’s side.

World Cup 2019: USA 2-0 Netherlands

Netherlands proved their Euro success was no fluke at the following World Cup, as Wiegman’s outfit won all their group games before eliminating Japan, Italy and Sweden to make it to the final, where they took on the United States.
Despite some resilient Dutch defending in the first half, the US ultimately beat Netherlands 2-0, courtesy of a Megan Rapinoe spot-kick just after the hour mark and a fine Rose Lavelle goal.
It was the USA’s third successive World Cup final and a record fourth victory.

Euro 2022: England 2-1 Germany

Less than a year after taking the reins as England manager, Wiegman led The Lionesses to their first major trophy against record eight-time champions Germany at Wembley.
Ella Toone came off the bench to score the opener in normal time, before Germany's Lina Magull netted in the 79th minute to set up a nervy finish.
However, substitute Kelly poked home a loose ball from a corner with 10minutes of extra time left to claim a historic victory.
It was the first time any side had beaten serial winners Germany in a Women's European Championship final.

World Cup 2023: Spain 1-0 England

Back in 2023, The Lionesses suffered heartbreak as Spain beat Wiegman’s side 1-0 in the World Cup final in Sydney.
Spain skipper Olga Carmona capitalised on a rare Lucy Bronze mistake to score the game’s only goal in the first half.
It was the first time Spain had won the Women's World Cup in their history, and only the second match in two years that England had lost under Wiegman.

Euro 2025: England 1-1 Spain (England win 3-1 on penalties)

Wiegman made it a European Championship hat-trick and England made it a double when they gained revenge on Spain on Sunday night.
England, who had struggled to find their best form for much of the tournament, went behind in the first half when Mariona Caldentey scored on 25 minutes, but equalised through Alessia Russo on 57 minutes.
Wiegman's side then held on with some determined defending, with their backs to the wall through much of extra time. However, they held on and the match went to penalties.
Goalkeeper Hannah Hampton was the hero as she saved two penalties, with Spain missing another, as Chloe Kelly converted the winning spot-kick for England.
