The Women’s Ballon d’Or nominees have been revealed, and there are plenty of familiar names on the initial list of 30 players.
This trophy has been awarded since 2018, and has been dominated by Spanish players of late, with Alexia Putellas winning twice before Aitana Bonmati took home the award in 2023 and again in 2024.
Those two are both nominated this year, after good seasons with Barcelona, who won the domestic treble but came up just short in the Champions League final against Arsenal.
Speaking of, Arsenal have a gaggle of players nominated this year, including Mariona Caldentey, Steph Catley, Emily Fox and Frida Leonhardsen Maanum.
But Arsenal’s standout English stars have also grabbed some nominations - notably Leah Williamson, Chloe Kelly and Alessia Russo.
Those three all had brilliant seasons for the Gunners, but also impressed for the national team as England defeated Spain in the final of the Euros to defend their title - Kelly getting the crucial penalty in the final shootout.
There are five English players on the nominees list out of 30, with Lucy Bronze’s feats for Chelsea earning her a nod, along with her clubmate Hannah Hampton.
Hampton is also nominated for the Yachine Trophy, and is the only goalkeeper on the Ballon d’Or list.
Marta is nominated at the age of 39, the veteran star plying her trade at Orlando Pride still, while she wrestles with whether to keep playing internationals after initially retiring last year after the Paris Olympics - only to make her comeback for Brazil not that long after.
She is not the only Orlando Pride player on the list, with Barbra Banda joining her.
With Chelsea and Barcelona both enjoying incredible seasons, it is no surprise to see plenty nominated from those two sides, including Johanna Rytting Kaneryd and Sandy Baltimore for Chelsea, while Caroline Graham Hansen, Patri Guijarro, Ewa Pajor and Claudia Pina join the list for the Spanish giants.
Real Madrid have just the one nominee - Scotland’s Caroline Weir, who is their leading all-time goalscorer now after netting her 40th earlier this year.
