After taking pole position in qualifying, and spending most of the Formula E curtain-raiser in the lead before securing victory, Porsche's Pascal Wehrlein scored 28 points in the first round of the season. That puts him top of the pack after the first round, and he explained how difficult it was to lead from the front given the demands on his vehicle.

Wehrlein reflects on 'pretty controlled' win in Formula E season-opener

Pascal Wehrlein celebrated victory in a “tough race” in the season-opening Formula E E-Prix in Mexico City on Saturday.
The competition, which you can watch live on TNT Sports, returned for 2024 and it was Porsche’s Wehrlein who started and finished in pole position, though he did briefly lose his spot to Sebastien Buemi, who finished in second, with Nick Cassidy claiming the last spot on the podium for Jaguar.
Speaking to TNT Sports after his win, Wehrlein explained the demands of leading from the front.
He said: “It was a tough race because we were leading most of the race, and that’s not so efficient for energy, but for me when I took over the lead, every lap was more or less like a qualifying, trying to maximise all my minimum speeds.
“I saw that Seb did a small mistake behind me which opened a small gap for me and from then it was pretty controlled.
“It’s definitely great to start the season like this, last season - especially the second half - was frustrating, so we stick together and we try to improve all our weaknesses, so we don’t suffer the same issues.”

Buemi reflected on his decision to settle for second rather than challenge for first place towards the end of the race, explaining that an investigation into Wehrlein - which was yet to be completed - meant it was not worth the risk to push hard.
He began: “It was a smooth race, and earlier the qualifying was the key point because it’s quite difficult to pass here. I think we had a clean race, I had a bit of a moment in turn 1 and lost position, but I was able to recover.

“Pascal was fast, apparently he was under investigation so I didn’t want to try too much. So if it comes even better I will be happy with that too. The last five laps I was under consuming, I guess I could have got close but to pass at that point it would have been really risky, so I thought I would take P2 and see what happens.”
