Newcastle United were bailed out by Joe Willock, as the midfielder's controversial brace helped Eddie Howe's side scrape past League One Birmingham City with a 3-2 victory.
Former Manchester United academy graduate Ethan Laird gave the third-tier side a shock lead, thundering home inside the opening minute from Keshi Anderson's cushioned header.
Willock, though, responded in controversial fashion for the Premier League side, with his equaliser judged to cross the line in spite of replays providing inconclusive evidence that it had.
Callum Wilson joined in on the act five minutes later to give Newcastle a first-half lead. but Tomoki Iwata brought the tie back level with a spectacular, first-time, long-range effort which flew into the top corner.
The two sides struggled to replicate their high-scoring antics after the break, but Willock emerged eight minutes from time to sink the all-important winner, squeezing home an effort from a tight angle to send Newcastle through to the last 16.
With Howe's side also set to take on Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final in March, The Magpies remain in contention for two pieces of domestic silverware, while also pushing for a UEFA Champions League spot in the Premier League, sitting just two points off fourth-placed Chelsea.

Bournemouth continue fine run

Bournemouth's stunning 2024/25 season continued as they sealed their spot in the FA Cup fifth round with a 2-0 victory over Everton.
The Toffees had enjoyed a fine run of three consecutive wins under returning manager David Moyes ahead of the cup clash, but they were beaten in comfortable fashion.
Antoine Semenyo was the first to strike, slotting home a penalty midway through the first half to put Andoni Iraola's side a goal to the good.
And Daniel Jebbison doubled the visitors' lead two minutes before the break, scuffing an effort home after James Tarkowski's stray pass was cut out by Marcus Tavernier.
Their 2-0 Premier League defeat to leaders Liverpool aside, Bournemouth have not tasted defeat since November, as they are vying for a maiden European campaign.
That could be secured either by a high placing in the top-flight standings - with The Cherries currently sitting seventh - or winning the FA Cup, and they now advance to the last 16 of the competition.
