Manchester United have signed Manuel Ugarte from Paris Saint-Germain in a deal that could reportedly be worth up to £50.7 million if certain clauses are met.
The Uruguayan midfielder was reportedly keen to make the move happen even without the prospect of UEFA Champions League football at the Premier League club.
Ugarte will initially join on loan, before the deal becomes permanent at the end of the current season.
“It is an incredible feeling to join a club of this magnitude; one that is admired all around the world," Ugarte told club media.
"The project that the football leadership discussed with me is extremely exciting; Manchester United is an ambitious club and I am an ambitious player.
"I’m someone who is so determined to succeed; I will sacrifice and give everything for my team-mates. Together we will fight to win trophies and reach the level where this club needs to be.”
Recently appointed United technical director Dan Ashworth added his delight at signing one of their "primary targets for this summer."
"He is among the very best ball-winning midfield players in the world and has an excellent record at both club and international level. His qualities, experience and passion will be a great complement to our strong group of midfielders.
“Manuel is a player we’ve watched closely, and we are excited to see the positive impact he will make on the pitch and in the dressing room as we continue to strive for success," Ashworth added.
As the signing was completed after the midday registration deadline on Friday, Ugarte will not be eligible to face Liverpool this weekend.
Erik ten Hag’s side had already confirmed the signings of Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna and Leny Yoro from Lille, and both Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui from Bayern Munich.
Ugarte, who reached this summer's Copa America semi-final with Uruguay, emerged as a prime candidate for United after Scott McTominay moved to Napoli in a deal worth £25.2m.
He joined PSG in last year's summer transfer window from Sporting CP and quickly became an important cog in the Parisians' midfield.
The Uruguayan has won 22 caps for his country since making his international bow in September 2021.
