Chelsea to pay Manchester United £5m penalty to avoid signing Jadon Sancho permanently, as 'grateful' forward confirms exit

Jadon Sancho scored in the UEFA Conference League final as Chelsea secured another European trophy with a 4-1 win against Spanish side Real Betis. However, the England forward will now return to parent club Manchester United after The Blues rejected the opportunity to sign him on a permanent deal. Sancho previously impressed across two spells with Borussia Dortmund.

Jadon Sancho will not sign a permanent deal to remain at Chelsea, confirming his exit on social media.
The development means the England forward will return to his parent club Manchester United after spending last season on loan with The Blues.
Reports suggest that Chelsea will now have to pay a £5 million penalty fee as a result of their decision not to sign the 25-year-old permanently.
The Athletic report that Sancho "has options in England and elsewhere around Europe".
Sancho wrote on Instagram on Tuesday evening: "Grateful for the experience. Big love to everyone at Chelsea who made me feel at home - team-mates, staff, and the fans.
"Wishing the club all the best moving forward. Truly grateful, thank you Blues."
Sancho scored three goals and registered five assists in 31 Premier League appearances last term, but struggled to establish himself as a regular starter in Enzo Maresca's side.
However, he did play eight times in the UEFA Conference League, scoring two goals and contributing five assists.
One of those goals came in the final as Chelsea beat Real Betis 4-1 to become the first club to win all three major UEFA club competitions.
Sancho signed for The Red Devils in a deal reportedly worth around £73 million in July 2021, but he has struggled to adapt to life at Old Trafford.

He had previously impressed as part of Manchester City's academy and at Borussia Dortmund.
After a difficult few months under former United boss Erik ten Hag, Sancho returned to Dortmund on loan during the 2023/24 campaign.
The loan was a success, with the forward starting in the 2023/24 UEFA Champions League final.
However, Dortmund ultimately fell to a 2-0 defeat as Real Madrid won their 15th Champions League crown.
