Good evening! It’s been a bit of a week for Tottenham Hotspur, so much so that it’d be easy to forget that the games keep on coming. Today sees Southampton visit north London as Ryan Mason takes charge of his first Spurs game. I’ll bring you build-up over the next 45 minutes, followed by live text commentary.

There hasn’t exactly been much evidence of Mason magic sprinkled on this Spurs performance so far. The hosts have been disjointed and largely unthreatening going forward, and vulnerable defensively… essentially how they’ve looked for much of the last three months under Mourinho.

Lo Celso has a crack from a decent position on the edge of the box, but his effort is blocked.

Walker-Peters latches onto a fluffed Reguilon interception and only the onrushing Lloris denies Southampton an opening goal.

Ings tries to find Adams on the break, but Alderweireld is alive to it and cuts out the cross.

Salisu fails to cut out a long pass and ball finds Lo Celso with a clever back-heel. The Argentine looks to bend a shot into the far corner but can’t quite get the curl on it. Son was free and may have been the better option.

Still Southampton dominate. It’s been really controlled stuff from the visitors so far, calm on the ball and organised off it.

It’s been all Southampton in the opening stages, with the visitors controlling possession and looking to get the ball into the box from wide whenever possible.

Still can’t get over that from Hugo Lloris. Remarkable goalkeeping.

Oh my word, what a double-save! A cross is whipped in onto the head of the unmarked Salisu, who is denied by a stunning Lloris stop. The loose ball falls straight to Che Adams, all on his own and with the goal gaping, but Lloris somehow scrambles to his feet to make a second sensational save. The Southampton players hold their head in their hands, mouths gaping. They can barely believe it isn’t 1-0.

So, after a week of sporting politics and off-field drama, it’s time for some football. Southampton, kitted all in red, get the game underway.
Talking of poor form, Southampon have endured a horrific second half of the season, losing 11 of their last 14 league matches. A 3-0 defeat to West Brom last time out hinted at some significant problems for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side… tonight could be a tough one if Spurs are up for it.
Their form isn’t great though. At all. In the last 12 Premier League games they have picked up just 14 points – an identical record to the 12 matches before Mauricio Pochettino was sacked. Spurs have also been knocked out of the FA Cup and Europa League during that time.
Spurs go into this game in seventh and needing a win to keep alive their dwindling hopes of a European qualification spot (something that presumably is now relevant again after their Super League u-turn).
Will we see Mourinho back in English football again? Perhaps. But a trend has been set, with his fall from grace at Spurs following a very similar pattern to his previous jobs at Manchester United and Chelsea.
Just a week out from the League Cup final against Manchester City, Spurs pulled the plug on Mourinho’s increased sour tenure, bringing his time at the club to an end after a 17-month stint.

Sacked Mourinho leaves Spurs training ground for last time

One thing all the Super League furore has done, however, is to very much overshadow the massive news that Jose Mourinho is no longer manager of Tottenham Hotspur.
Quite what this means for the relationship between Tottenham’s chairman Daniel Levy and the club’s supporters remains to be seen. And frankly I wouldn’t rule out this idea raising its head again in the future, particularly given the nature of the statement given by Levy on Tuesday night, which reiterated that he believed the move was in the interest of the club.

So, on to the week of drama. Just in case you’ve been living under a rock, here is the summary: Spurs – one of 12 European clubs coined the ‘dirty dozen’ – confirmed their intention to join a new European Super League on Sunday night, only to withdraw yesterday after two days of furious reaction from fans of all clubs. It’s been a quite remarkable weekend that threatened to completely change the sport for good.
