Good evening! It’s been a bit of a week for Tottenham Hotspur, so much so that it’d be easy to forget that the games keep on coming. Today sees Southampton visit north London as Ryan Mason takes charge of his first Spurs game. I’ll bring you build-up over the next 45 minutes, followed by live text commentary.

The whistle goes and Ryan Mason begins his Spurs tenure with a morale-boosting win ahead of the weekend’s cup final. Goals from Gareth Bale and Heung-Min Son did it for Spurs in the end, after Danny Ings had given Southampton a first-half lead. At the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium it finishes Spurs 2, Southampton 1.
It’s a cliché, but this really has been a game of two halves. Southampton dominated before the break, but Spurs have been excellent since the restart and probably just about deserve the win (if it stays this way) on the balance of the chances.
There will be six minutes of added time for Southampton to rescue a point.
GOOOAAALLL!!! Heung-Min Son steps up to take the penalty and tucks it home. It’s 2-1 to Spurs and that could well be the game!
The penalty for handball isn’t given, but the second foul is, and it’s right on the edge of the box. VAR zooms right in and adjudges that the foul occurred inside the box. It’s a penalty for Spurs!
Spurs appeal for a penalty for handball and then a foul on Reguilon as the Spaniard squirts a shot wide.
The game has lost its spark a little. Can one of these teams conjure up a chance to win it?
Tella is replaced by Redmond.
It’s another change for Spurs and the lesser-spotted Bergwijn comes on for Bale.
Lo Celso makes way for Lamela as Spurs make another change.

E. Lamela

Bale clips a cross towards Son, but the flag is up for an offside (correctly).
Harry Winks is in for Spurs in midfield, replacing Ndombele for some fresh legs in the final few moments.
Spurs think they have the lead as Lo Celso finds Reguilon with a lovely pass, who squares for Son to tuck into the bottom corner. However, VAR spots Lucas in an offside position that may be blocking the view of the goalkeeper and the goal is chalked off.
The ball drops to Bale in a dangerous position, but his shot isn’t the best and curls well wide.
Southampton make a change and it’s the end of Walcott’s evening. On comes Djenepo.

Lo Celso hooks the ball across the face of goal, but Salisu is alive to the danger and denies Bale at the back post.
Bale could be playing his way into the starting line-up for the cup final here. He’s everywhere for Spurs right now, looking like the Bale of old (minus some of the pace of course).
Son tries to weave his way through the defence after a cute lay-off from Lo Celso. Spurs are ticking now – quite what Mason adjusted at the break isn’t particularly clear, but it’s certainly worked.
Tella goes down in the box under pressure from Bale, but nothing is given and VAR doesn’t step in. That would have been soft.
GOOOAAALLL!!! Spurs have the equaliser and it’s Gareth Bale who’s got it. He’s been the best player on the park since the restart and takes full advantage when a deflected Lucas shot falls to him on the right of the box, stepping onto his left foot and curling a shot into the far corner. 1-1.
