That is Ronaldo's 20th goal of the season, and when you consider the criticism he has faced at times of the campaign that is quite the tally. He's still among the very best.

Ronaldo grabbed the goal but it was Kovacic who made the excellent pass through to the Real Madrid number seven. The Croatian has been exceptional this evening.

Real Sociedad have emerged for the second half with renewed energy and drive. They are the ones pressing and probing around the edge of the penalty area.

No changes made by either side at the break. Real Madrid were probably the better of the two sides in the first half, but Real Sociedad certainly carry a threat of their own.

The home side now look to be quite happy to sit deep, invite Real Sociedad on to themselves and see out this first half with a 1-0 lead. Game management, they call this.

Kovacic has probably been the best player on the pitch in this first half, so it's fitting that he should grab the opening goal. The Croatian showed lovely touch there to finish under the keeper.

What is rather surprising about this system for Real Madrid is that it's Kroos who is playing as the deepest midfielder. Casemiro is being allowed to push farther up the pitch.

Real Madrid miss Modric when he's not playing. Their midfield trio of Casemiro, Kroos and Kovacic is good, but the Croatian just gives them a certain swagger in the middle.

Oh Ronaldo should have played the pass. He took the shot from the edge of the box, slicing it well wide of the target, but Kovacic was completely free on his left side.

Real Sociedad must be rather pleased with how this game is going so far. They look to be comfortable on the ball, with Real Madrid leaving space in behind for them to expose.
