Was that a penalty? Messi threads through Neymar who cuts across his marker, with Bailley eventually bringing the Barcelona attacker down. But the referee waves away claims for a spot kick.

Xavi almost finds the run of Pique at the back post with a clipped delivery from a freekick, but the defender can't quite stretch far enough to send the cross goalwards. Nice idea though.

So how will Barcelona build on their equalising goal at the end of the first half? Despite the scoreline they need to play much better in the second half. They have been generally poor.

HALF TIME: Barcelona 1 Espanyol 1. Not the best half for the Catalans but they are on level terms thanks to an astonishing goal from Messi. But still plenty to concern Enrique.

GOOOOAL! Barcelona 1 (45 mins - Lionel Messi) Espanyol 1. Barca needed some individual magic and that's what they got from Messi, who curls a low shot into the bottom left corner from 20 yards.

Espanyol have had just 26% of the possession in this first half, but they have created the two best chances of the game. That demonstrates just how potent they are on the break.

Enrique must be concerned by how easy it has been for Espanyol to thread passes straight through the centre of the Barcelona defence in this first half. Their defending has been atrocious.

Big save from Bravo prevents Espanyol from going 2-0 up! Sanchez breaks beyond the Barca defence but takes a heavy touch, allowing the goalkeeper to come off his line and make the challenge.

Barcelona are still dominating the game around the edge of the opposition box, but it's all a bit predictable. Espanyol are camping in deep and are looking to hit hard on the counter attack.

Suarez seems slightly out of sync with the rest of his team, and that has been a common theme all the way through his Barcelona career to date. He still isn't used to this style of play.

Big save from Casilla! Messi picks out the run of Alba peeling away at the back post with a wonderful pass, but the left-back sees his shot saved and can't turn home the rebound either.

That wasn't too far away from Suarez! Rakitic's low cross to the 16 yard mark is pulled back for the former Liverpool striker, but he skews his shot wide of the near post when he should have done better.

Bailley has been the man of the match for me so far. He has dealt with everything that has been thrown his way, including the dribbling runs of Messi. The centre-back is clearing and tackling the lot.

For the first time in the game Messi has the chance to dribble past a few Espanyol players, but just as it looks like he's about to stick a shot past Casilla, Bailley makes another challenge.

From the corner kick, Pique rises highest to meet the delivery, but his header is straight at Casilla, who has the simple task of catching the effort. Strange to see Barca lump it in the box from a corner.

Barcelona quicken the play up around the edge of the box, but once again Bailley is on hand to make the challenge to prevent Rakitic from working a cross into the danger area.

Off the woodwork! Messi lines up a freekick on the edge of the box after being brought down by Sevilla, but he crashes his shot off the top of the crossbar. The keeper was nowhere near that!
