The 20-year-old signed for the Premier League side in 2009 having started his youth career with Manchester United and then Crewe.
Marshall is yet to make a first-team appearance for the Potters but has enjoyed success during loan spells at Northampton, Cheltenham and Carlisle, spending a large part of the previous two campaigns at Brunton Park.
Marshall, who can also play in attack, made 42 appearances for the Cumbrians last season and scored five goals, claiming a Johnstone`s Paint Trophy winners` medal in the process despite going off injured midway through the first half.
"This is a great opportunity for me, it was an easy decision to make," he said following his loan switch to Hillsborough. "My main position is a winger but I can play in the hole and up front. Hopefully I can bring some goals as well.
"I have played in front of big crowds before and I'm really looking forward to doing that here."
