Norwich City are nine points clear of second-placed Swindon Town but only two points separate the Robins and Charlton in fifth, with Millwall and Leeds United in third and fourth.
Swindon had no trouble seeing off struggling Tranmere Rovers 3-0 at the County Ground.
A 10th-minute own goal from Ben Gordon set the hosts on their way and Billy Paynter doubled the lead from the spot in the 37th minute after Terry Gornell was dismissed for a foul on the striker. Charlie Austin made it three in the 56th minute.
Millwall stayed a point behind Swindon after beating off-form Colchester 2-1. Kevin Lisbie cancelled out Steve Morison's opener for the Lions but a Danny Batth own-goal 12 minutes from time gave the visitors the points.
Richard Naylor scored twice in the first half as Leeds United ended a run of four defeats with a 2-1 victory over Yeovil, for whom Dean Bowditch netted to set up a nervy finish.
Charlton beat Carlisle 1-0 thanks to Sam Sodje's goal while table-toppers Norwich made it a perfect day for the leading sides with a 2-1 victory over basement boys Stockport.
Anthony McNamee put the hosts ahead after three minutes only for Jabo Ibehre to net an equaliser. But Grant Holt's 25th-minute strike proved the winner as the Canaries maintained their nine-point advantage.
Gillingham beat fellow strugglers Southend 3-0 thanks to second-half goals from Dennis Oli, Rene Howe and Andy Barcham.
Hartlepool are now four points clear of the bottom four thanks to a 2-0 win against Brighton, with Roy O'Donovan and Andy Monkhouse scoring the goals.
Wycombe slumped to a 2-1 defeat at Walsall with first-half goals from Emmanuele Smith and Julian Gray enough for the Saddlers despite Adam Hinshelwood's 78th-minute effort for the visitors.
Southampton continued their play-off burst by coming from behind to beat Leyton Orient 2-1. John Spicer netted after only two minutes but Adam Lallana turned things around either side of half-time.
Bristol Rovers are also in contention for the top six but MK Dons' challenge looks to be over after Jo Kuffour gave Rovers a 1-0 win. The Dons had Mathias Doumbe sent off late on for two yellow cards.
Exeter picked up a valuable point in their fight against the drop in a 0-0 draw at Brentford.
