And Ugarte pursues it to the by-line, protecting it and forcing a corner. It comes to nothing, but United are playing with an intensity they find hard to impose domestically. It's partly a physical thing, but you can tell they fancy themselves to score too.

Hojlund holds up well when fed by Dorgo, tees up Bruno on the edge, who strikes across another monster ... and it whizzes a yard wide of the top corner. His form the last few months has been astounding, even by his astounding standards.

A few minutes ago he berated Dalot for not playing the pass Mazraoui did before the goal, which is always on. So Dalot sends him a beauty, he watches it over his shoulder, then launches into a leaping stretch-volley, finishes on the slide ... and which slams the bar! That would've been one of the great goals; goodness me, what a ludicrous player he is.

He's passing aggressively and carrying when he can – here he comes now – and though nothing comes of it, it's big development.

And already, Old Trafford is tense.

I'm 46 but there's no other word for it. He moves backwards with the ball, turns it on the outside of his foot, and grooves away from Dorgu – there's a bit of Adel Taraabt about him, maybe a bit of Xherdan Shaqiri too – away from Casemiro, and on the edge of the box, Yoro pulls out of the challenge. What a goal this could be and Cherki looks to punch low to Onana's right ... but it needs to either be in the corner or harder, because the keeper gets down to tip around the post!

United won't mind that, but Tagliafico then swings in a cross, Yoro looks to backheel a clearance and misses – that was less my colleague Rio Ferdinand – and Lyon don't have anyone in the box to capitalise.

Around the penalty spot and the contact is good ... but Perri tips away! Great save and then, when Lyon gets away down the right, Maitland-Niles megging Casemiro on the run, Yoro simply opens his legs and retrieves the situation. In style and gait, he is not dissimilar to my colleague, Rio Ferdinand.

But Robbie Savage, who loves his coaching these days, notices Garnacho, if United can find him, is one on one, with Niakhate ... and here it comes! He races on to the ball and away from his man, as we were advised he would, shoots from the edge, and the effort Lois blocked behind.

And when the ball drops to him, Mata wellies wildly.

Cherki finds Almada, who shoots ... and Maguire blocks well. In comes the corner, Akoukou has a free header ... and Onana tips it over the top!

And Tagliafico leaps into a screaming fall as Maguire and Mazraouii look to intercept; someone may have stood on his foot . No penalty.

There's conviction and tempo about them; it's quite disquieting. Then Dalot shoots over, Lyon run forward and a really nice ball from Almada sets Cherki at Maguire, who blocks his attempted cross easily enough. But this is better from Lyon.

Bruno, who's all over this game, takes it away from Veretout – he's running with it more these days – and before he can find Garnacho, he's fouled. Yellow card for Veretout.

But they know this is their moment to try and get the second goal ... and Garnacho catches Tolisso in possession, feeds Casemiro and this should be 2-0! But his shit,t rough the defender's legs, is a little too close to Perri, who makes a really good save low to uie right at cost of a corner ... which comes to nowt.

You can see the ability, and it's rarely said that he's played very few top-level games. But how can he find it on a regular?

But United were starting to find spaces. They're not good enough to be a confidence team, but you can see they think they're the better side.

Mazraoui bends a clever ball over the top and down the right, Bruno gathes well, and cuts back for Garnacho, on the burst, who takes a deliberately heavy first touch, it takes him away from the defenders towards the line, and he squares for Ugarte to ram home.

But do they have the quality to force a goal?

Before the ball comes in; the ref tells him off, then Bruno's delivery is cleared. United pick it up again, Hojlund holds up and slips Bruno through on the edge... and he dithers! I'm surprised he didn't get a man on, and Tolisso gets back to tackle.
