UNITED SNEAK INTO SEMIS IN ASTOUNDING CLASSIC
With 70 minutes gone, United were more or less comfortable, 2-0 up on the night and 4-2 on aggregate. Then Lyon came back from the dead, forcing extra time, went two goals in front despite being down to 10 men ... only for United to come back from the dead, scoring three in the final six minutes to set up a last-four tie with Athletic Bilbao at the end of a tussle of wild, epic, incomparable proportions. Football: there is nothing like it.
United were excellent in the first half, Manuel Ugarte and Diogo Dalot putting them two goals in front. But Lyon's attackers always looked capable of causing problems, and two goals on 71 and 78, from Corentin Tolisso and Nicolas Tagliafico, suddenly brought them back into the contest.
But when, with a minute to go, Tolisso was unluckily sent off, shown a second yellow card for accidentally tripping Casemiro, Lyon looked finished. Not so.
Their front-three attacked with verve and purpose, Rayan Cherki lasering in a beauty to put them in front, then Alexandre Lacazette converted a penalty after a foul on Malick Fofana; Lyon looked set for a wondrous, miraculous victory for the ages.
United, though, inspired by a booming Old Trafford, came again. First, Casemiro bought a penalty that Bruno Fernandes convered on 114; on 120, Kobbie Mainoo showed incredible composure in the box to conjure an equaliser; and on 120+1, Harry Maguire guided a fine header into the far side-netting, completing a comeback outrageous even in by the standard and remind the planet once again that football remains undefeated.

I'M STRUGGLING TO PROCESS THE SCOPE OF THE HUMILIATION UNITED AVERTED
It's bigger than the galaxy.
MORE MAGUIRE
He felt United would get chances when behind and when they equalised, felt they could get a winner. He didn't think he fouled the defender, could see it all the way, so was able to guide it home.
"AN AMAZING COMEBACK"
Says Mainoo. He thinks United put themselves into that position and when he came on he tried to bring energy. When the ball drops to you in the box, "a yard feels like a mile", so you just have to stay calm. Simple, right?
"WE MADE HARD WORK OF IT"
Deadpans a visibly relieved Harry Maguire. He thinks United were in control then conceded a "pinball goal" out of nothing. He adds that coneding twice against 10 men is unacceptable, but Lyon are good with good forwards. So they dug in and Old Trafford can drive you on to make things happen.

THIS GOAL
Is not unlike ones Mainoo scored at wolves in the league and at home to Liverpool in the Cup. He's so brilliant in tight spaces, and though he doesn't really fit Amorim's profile, he's too good for a way not to be found.

LYON PLAYED SO WELL FROM 70 MINUTES
Cherki, Almada and Fofana were a threat every time they went forward, with 10 as well as 11. But United, driven on by Bruno Fernandes, found a way, and goodness me Harry Maguire will he's suffered for that moment. As for Amorim, he'd have handled capitulation well, but his leadership would've needed time to recover. Goodness me.

FULL TIME: MANCHESTER UNITED (7) 5-4 (6) LYON
That, friends, was a game of association football. Biggup, hold tight, well done both teams. But after Lyon saved themselves, it's Manchester United who save themselves and meet Athletic Bilbao in the last four.

IT'S IMPOSSIBLE TO OVERSTATE THE IMPORT OF THIS MENTALNESS
To either club. Lyon pump into the box, United get it away. They must be almost there.

I FORGOT TO SAY
Sorry, things got busy. But it's five additional minutes.
120+3
MAGUIRE DID NOT SHOVE THE DEFENDER
Manchester United don't mind a comeback, but goodness me, this is one of the most mind-boggling. Old Trafford looks a lot fuller than it did 10 minutes ago.

VAR WANTS A LOOK!
Did Maguire shove the defender? Er ... perhaps?!

SADLKJNASDONSAOINASDO GOAL! MANCHESTER UNITED (7) 5-4 (6) LYON (MAGUIRE)
ARE WE ALIVE! Casemiro dinks to the back post, Maguire leaps, guides into the far side-netting like the natural centre-forward he is, and this is some of the maddest behaviour you'll see on this mad, mad mad planet! ONLY FOOTBALL!

WHAT A GOAL! MANCHESTER UNITED (6) 4-4 (6) LYON (Mainoo)
MANCHESTER UNITED HAVE SAVED THEMSELVES! A ball into Mainoo, he controls, chops inside on to his right foot, and calmly bends into the far corner! OH MY DAYS! OLD TRAFFORD IS ABLAZE!

UNITED LOOK FOR A GAP
Shaw plays into Maitland-Niles.

PERRI TAKES TREATMENT
Of course he does. But eventually he's up and United pour forward again, Shaw's cross headed away. But when it's tossed in again, Niakhate clears to Fernandes ... who cuts across too much of it and it sails well wide. This is some association football, mates.
