The 2024/25 UEFA Champions League is at its business end as the best in Europe battle it out for the ultimate prize in club football.
There was plenty of intrigue around the latest edition of the tournament, which featured a new format and an extra four teams.
The new league phase delivered in spades, with giants such as Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich and Manchester City plunged into the play-offs.
Meanwhile, Liverpool cruised through by winning their first seven games, and were joined by two more English sides in Arsenal and Aston Villa with a bye to the round of 16.
The Reds have since fallen to PSG in a gripping tie, though, while City were eliminated by a Kylian Mbappe-inspired Real Madrid.
Eight teams now remain, with one of the most open competitions seen in recent years. According to Opta, Barcelona are the new favourites, albeit only by a slim margin (20.4% chance, with PSG next up on 19.3%).

When are the UEFA Champions League knockout stages?
The 2024/25 UEFA Champions League knockout matches began in February 2024.
The final will be played at the Munich Football Arena on May 31, 2025.
Here is the remaining schedule for the knockout stages:
- Quarter-finals: April 8/9 & 15/16
- Semi-finals: April 29/30 & May 6/7
- Final: May 31
What is the new Champions League format?
There has been a major change to the Champions League for 2024/25 onwards. The number of teams has been increased from 32 to 36, who will now compete in a single league stage.
Rather than the traditional group phase, each side plays eight different teams – four at home and four away – with the top eight advancing directly to the last 16.
Teams finishing ninth to 24th contest the two-legged knockout round play-offs, with the winners completing the last 16.

In the league phase, teams cannot play another from the same country and cannot face more than two sides from any one country.
Once the 16 qualifiers are determined, the knockout rounds play out as normal.
