MBAPPE RUNS RIOT AS MADRID ELIMINATE MAN CITY
Kylian Mbappe scored a stunning hat-trick in a 3-1 victory for Real Madrid over Manchester City on Wednesday, which handed Pep Guardiola’s side an early exit from the 2024/25 UEFA Champions League.
The French star opened the scoring after four minutes with a brilliant lob after a pinpoint route-one ball from defender Marco Asensio.
Mbappe grabbed a second later in the first half with a clinical effort, showcasing sensational footwork in the box before smashing the ball past Ederson from close range.
He added a third in the second half, wrapping up his second hat-trick of the season with a low, bending effort to put Madrid in cruise control and all but book their spot in the last 16.
Man City scored a consolation through Nico Gonzalez - his first goal for the club - who tapped into an empty net from close range after Omar Marmoush crashed a free-kick off the crossbar.

LESCOTT ON 'DEVASTATING' CITY PERFORMANCE
"It's devastating, because they're expected to win it and want to go far in the competition," he told TNT Sports.
"You've got to put things into perspective, this is still Real Madrid. If [City] had come here, having won the previous 10 games, they wouldn't have been favourites.
"So in the condition and the form and the inconsistencies that they've had this season, we shouldn't be surprised.
"But the performance is probably the most devastating because it was a thoroughly deserved win, a controlled win."

'THE LIGHT IS AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL' FOR MADRID
"They can see the silverware in the distance, and this is when it starts to get serious," TNT Sports pundit Rio Ferdinand said.
"Real Madrid are notorious for turning up at these stages. They've shown they can flick the switch at the right moments and the man walking off with the ball, Kylian Mbappe with the hat-trick today.
"Everyone talking about his slow start at Madrid, that happens. He's finally clicking into gear and is the Mbappe we've all grown to love and respect - a wonderful footballer. Today, he gave us a great example of how a number nine should perform."

CITY CHAMPIONS LEAGUE DREAM ENDS AS MBAPPE RUNS RIOT
It was always going to be a tough task for City, trailing by a goal heading to the Bernabeu. It was made harder when it was ruled that Erling Haaland was not fit to start - or indeed play any part at all.
And with the brilliance of Kylian Mbappe, who netted a spell-binding hat-trick to help Madrid over the line, it was all too much for Guardiola's side who were poor on the night.
So that ends their dreams of regaining the trophy they won for the first time nearly two years ago, with their Premier League title defence almost certainly beyond them.
As for Madrid, they've avoided an embarrassing early exit and will have all eyes firmly fixated on winning that illustrious 16th crown.

MCATEE FOULED - BUT SHOULD IT BE A PEN?
Diaz fouls McAtee on the edge of the box and referee Istvan Kovacs signals for a foul. However, McAtee looked inside the box and VAR fails to realise, leaving TNT Sports co-commentator McManaman stunned by the decision.
Either way, it won't matter and the free-kick comes to nothing, but that is pretty poor.
