I think they thought Lukaku guarantees goals, and would help them knock off the less good teams they struggled to beat last season. But this is a fair point, and if I was managing a side hoping to win the Prem, I wouldn't go near Big Rom, for all his good qualities.

They're bossing this at the moment, and after Kante scrabbles in midfield, he shoves to Rudiger who steps inside, then absolutely leathers a shot that swerves and dips, finishing not that far wide of the far post.

Their first in a bit, and Modric plays into Benzema, who touches off - probably for him - but before he can get there, Casemiro swings a wild leg at it, the shot flying miles over the bar.

Rudiger crossing for Havertz, but Mendy is up ahead of him to clear.

He's so hard to stop when he's in possession. But then he runs out of pitch, missing the ball when trying to keep it in, and a few yards away on the touchline, his manager is literally hopping mad.

They'll rue that first-leg performance, because they're a better side than Madrid.

On calling Benzema Benzy-mar. I've not a clue why. In Lyon, they called him Ben-ZEH-mah, stress on the second syllable.

He's floating in behind Werner and Havertz, and I don't imagine it'll be long before Casemiro is directed to look after him.

But in the meantime, Vinicius runs at James again, feinting inside then nipping outside; James, leaning the wrong way, extends a leg and gets just enough on the ball, which winds up with Benzema, just outside the box. He lets fly, but Silva waves a head in the way, deflecting the ball over the bar, and the corner comes to nowt.

Then finds Loftus-Cheek, running off him hoping for a return. But the passing lane is closed, so Loftus-Cheek tries a shot which is blocked at source.

Chelsea haven't even played well yet. Madrid have offered little, and here's Mount sliding Werner into space down the left of the box; Carvajal slides in to block the cross, but the visitors look the stronger side at the moment.

It's a bit high, truth be told - and the header goes high too.
