Carvajal does really well to run in behind Alonso, who moves out of the road when the cross comes in because he's trying to avoid conceding a corner. But instead the pass is a cut-back, and Valverde swipes a rasping outswinger just over the top.

Kroos finds Mendy down the left, and his terrific low cross has just too much pop on it for Benzema. The crowd are into this now.

Mount finds Werner, the pace on the pass allowing him to run around the corner for the onrushing Havertz. He's got Mount hollering at him in the middle, but he opts to shoot, slicing a poor effort wiinto the near-post side-netting.

And this time, it is Kroos who takes it, curling over the near side of the wall, but Courtois dives to shove away.

Who waits for it to drop because he has to, all the time James needs to poke away from him. That's a brilliant challenge.

About the award of that corner. But they've played poorly tonight and the break couldn't rouse them.

For a fifty-fifty with Courtois, so Casemiro inserts himself in between them, shepherding the ball back to his keeper as Havertz goes down. Casemiro didn't get the ball, and that was really close to a penalty. I guess I'm sort of glad it isn't, because the infringement was too minor to hand a team a goal, but according to the laws, perhaps it should've been.

Loftus-Cheek, who was really effective in the first half playing sort of right side of a diamond, bustles down his side and crosses; Nacho does well to clear before it can reach Werner.

Can Madrid improve, or are we about to see one of the great Champions-League comebacks.

Chelsea didn't play that well but did play well enough. They've got every chance of turning this around.

But the length of time Courtois takes taking a goalkick tells us Madrid aren't planning on using it to score.

I think they thought Lukaku guarantees goals, and would help them knock off the less good teams they struggled to beat last season. But this is a fair point, and if I was managing a side hoping to win the Prem, I wouldn't go near Big Rom, for all his good qualities.
