FACT: United's next goal will be their 300th in the Champions League, a tally only Real Madrid (312) and Barcelona (302) have achieved. It will be their 175th match in the competition.

FACT: Although United have been beaten four times out of four by German teams in the knockout stages, their overall record is good. They have lost only two of their last 13 games against German teams and have won five of the last six.

FACT: United have lost only one of their last 31 Champions League home games and have never lost by more than a single goal in the competition at Old Trafford in all of their 85 such matches. Ominous.

The Germans make a few changes, with Escudero in for Sarpei at left-back and youngster Julian Draxler partnering Raul up front instead of Edu. Draxler is making his first start for Schalke - he is 17!

Good news for United - Darren Fletcher, who has been out with a virus for around a month and is largely regarded as one of their better big-game players, is back on the bench. With Chelsea up at the weekend that is a boost - that game possibly explains United's rotation.

Well that is a risk isn't it - clearly Fergie thinks that even his second string can easily avoid what would need to be a heavy defeat. To be fair every player in there is a full international for a country of note, apart from Smalling who has trained with the England squad but not played yet. Also, the Premier League top scorer - Dimitar Berbatov - starts. 21 goals for him but not trusted in the big games it seems. Rooney, Rio not on the bench.
