O'Shea, captain for the night, does well to win a corner off Uchida. Nani takes it, Neuer flaps at the near post and totally misses it but he was fouled, Valencia pushing him.

Schalke have a corner but United clear and retain possession. Valencia sells Anderson very short but both Papadopolous and Baumjohann slide in and foul him.

Classic Berbatov on the left, turning Uchida and Hoewedes inside out with one of his trademark spin-turn combinations, but the final ball is straight at Neuer. To be fair he didn't have much choice, all alone for ages while support game. The problem of a five-man midfield...

I think Gibson will continue - he's up and jogs off to come back on. Probably just winded then.

Gibson is still down. Winded or a cracked rib.

Berbatov takea a high ball on the chest but is adjudged to have shoved his marker. Looked nothing wrong in that to me. Gibson is down now, he slid in on Farfan, winning the ball but taking a blow to the gut from the Peruvian.

Rafael with a cross on the right but it hits a defender and is easy for Neuer - a Manchester United target but allegedly Bayern-bound.

Rafael is tripped by Baumjohann. Van der Sar did not look happy at the space afforded to Farfan in that last half-chance.

Farfan sees a lot of space in the middle and he can shoot, firing past Evans's challenge but well wide of the post, Van der Sar watching it go.

Schalke have seen more of the ball so far than they did for much of the first leg.

Poor short corner routine but United keep it. Rafael with a lofted ball into Berbatov, great touch but he strayed just offside.

United now come forward, Nani buying a corner on the right with some nice skill.

A good spell of Schalke possession ends when Scholes is fouled.

Raul with a nice flick back, now Draxler on his first start, Jurado on the ball Escudero crosses but Smalling heads out.

Berbatov almost frees Nani but the whistle has gone for an offside.

The first half is underway at Old Trafford.

Schalke boss Ralf Ragnick: "We have to be well organised and take our chances when they are presented. Even if there are just two minutes left we still have to think about United and in 1999 when they were a goal down going into injury-time and they still managed to win."

Schalke's slim chances may depend on record-breaking striker Raul. The 33-year-old, who will be playing in his 142nd and perhaps last CL game, has scored a record 71 goals in the competition, including 66 for Real Madrid.

FACT: It's not all in United's favour though - Schalke are unbeaten in their last four away European games, including the 5-2 win at Inter last time out.

FACT: United's next goal will be their 300th in the Champions League, a tally only Real Madrid (312) and Barcelona (302) have achieved. It will be their 175th match in the competition.
