German Masters recap - Neil Robertson ousts defending champion Judd Trump in Berlin, Shaun Murphy beaten in decider

Judd Trump and Shaun Murphy were knocked out of the German Masters in the last 16 on a day of shocks in Berlin. Australia's Neil Robertson got the better of Trump and completed a 5-2 win to reach the quarter-finals. Murphy also failed to make the last eight after losing a final-frame decider to Yuan Sijun. Elsewhere, world champion Kyren Wilson kept his hopes alive with a win over Jak Jones.

Judd Trump and newly crowned Masters champion Shaun Murphy were the big-name casualties in the last 16 of the German Masters.
Defending champion Trump, who was seeking to bounce back after a disappointing Masters defeat to Kyren Wilson at Alexandra Palace, was beaten by Neil Robertson, while Murphy lost a final-frame decider against Yuan Sijun.
Robertson made breaks of 54, 86 and 131 to topple the world No. 1 5-2 and set up a quarter-final meeting with Yuan, who produced a superb display to shock Murphy.
Elsewhere, Wilson beat Jak Jones 5-3 in a repeat of last year’s World Championship final and will face Scotland’s Anthony McGill in the last eight.
In the other two quarter-finals, Xiao Guodong takes on Aaron Hill, and Wu Yize faces Barry Hawkins.

neil robertson beats Judd trump 5-2

An 86 followed by a 131 clearance, and Neil eliminates the player of the season so far. Next for him: Yuan Sijun.

Trump 2-4 ROBERTSON (0-100)

This ton, if he makes it, will be his 974th. I can't see him missing.

Trump 2-4 ROBERTSON (0-71)

Neil loves a ton and, match secure, he'll be looking to add one of those to his proud tally.

Trump 2-4 ROBERTSON (0-64)

Because there are balls everywhere, Neil is taking extra care over his shots – though he generally plays best at speed. He's been good tonight, especially once he got in front, and he's nearly there.

Trump 2-4 ROBERTSON (0-37)

Neil gets on to a red at the bottom of the pack so flows it home knowing that, if he plays with power, he's sending claret all over. A decent black follows, then a ball to middle, and this really should be curtains – which brings with it pressure, especially given the opponent.

Trump 2-4 ROBERTSON (0-12)

Judd goes at a long one to right corner, misses by a way, and when he goes in-off he leaves a starter for Neil, who slots home nicely. There are a few loose reds, but he'll soon have to dig into the pack, and if that goes well, he could secure f&m at this visit.

around the tables

  • Tom Ford 3-4 Aaron Hill
  • Yuan Sijun 3-3 Shaun Murphy

Trump 2-4 ROBERTSON

Neil clears with 86, the highest break of the match, and he's one away; Judd needs three on the spin.

Trump 2-3 ROBERTSON (46-59)

And t's just about OK, but this red to right corner is a presusre-pot ... and Neil caresses it home well. The colours are on their spots.

Trump 2-3 ROBERTSON (46-56)

Neil gets rid of the top-railed nause then patiently builds, developing the ball near the side. He cracks down the pink, gets on to it, and looks good. But it'll take a decent shot from brown to final red...

Trump 2-3 ROBERTSON (46-8)

But going into the pack off the black, he sticks in it so has to poke at one to right corner, bridging awkwardly ... and undercuts. Has he left one? I think he has you know, and Neil coaxes into right corner, adds the black, and this is a chance to take control of things. OIf he makes to most of this, he'll be nearly home – but there's a red on the top cushion and one not far from the side.

Trump 2-3 ROBERTSON (30-0)

Neil misses a ball to right corner not dissimilar from one he jiggered earlier and Judd gets away to the yellow bag, but he soon eruns out of position and plays safe. No matter: Neil gives him a look at a long one, he strokes it home beautifully, and he's in.

around the tables

  • Tom Ford 2-4 Aaron Hill
  • Yuan Sijun 3-3 Shaun Murphy

Trump 2-3 ROBERTSON

Another red to right corner ends the frame, Neil misses the browm, and Judd concedes.

Trump 2-2 ROBERTSON (6-63)

Neil makes sure of a red to right corner, frame ball, knocks the green safe, and Judd returns to the table needing twosnookers. I'm not sure he'll pursue them for long, though.

Trump 2-2 ROBERTSON (6-51)

Neil's escape leaves a starter but Judd can't quite send his next red long and diagonally to the green pocket; chance for Neil to finish things.

Trump 2-2 ROBERTSON (1-50)

Judd clips to the corner but the remaining reds, all bar one down the left side of the table, will not be easily removed. So it's in behind the yellow, and something for Neil to think about.

Trump 2-2 ROBERTSON (0-50)

It's fiddly but Neil keeps it going well. A few more pots and the frame will surely be his ..but as I type, a cannon takes him out of position so he plays safe, plenty points left on the table.

Trump 2-2 ROBERTSON (0-23)

Neil cracks in a starter and the reds are separated, but lots are blocking each other and the black is on the cushion so, though there are points to be had, the table will take some working out.

we go again

Neil'll feel he's missed an opportunity to lead; Judd'll be content. We'll be back in 15.

Trump 1-2 ROBERTSON (60-34)

Unable to pot the blue, Judd lays a snooker when Neil already needs one; I'm not sure why the concession doesn't come when he misses his escape. It's a matter of time.

Trump 1-2 ROBERTSON (48-34)

Both reds wind up on the side, but then Neil releases one and Judd strokes it to middle. He can't though, get on the other, so plays in behid the black, also on the side, and he must surely have thought the red might treble ... which it does! This is going level at the interval.

Trump 1-2 ROBERTSON (38-30)

There's a red not far off the side, but as I type Neil knocks the other one into it so now both are tied up, and he also doesn't get on a colour. Other than that, he played a terrific shot. Anyhow, a safety follows, and this is now another tense, absorbing frame that'll turn on a ball or two.

Trump 1-2 ROBERTSON (38-22)

Again it Neil who returns to the table with a pot on and he strokes confidently into left corner then sets about reducing the deficit.

Trump 1-2 ROBERTSON (38-1)

Again, Judd comes to the table with a straightforward pot awaiting him, he sinks it, soon breaks the pack ... and a red first knocks the pink out of commission, then blocks his route to the blue. That is amazing. He tries for the latter anyway, it stays out, and this time it's Neil who's left a plant. He too sees it away, but manages to land on nowt.

Trump 1-2 ROBERTSON (29-0)

Neil returns to his seat chuntering and why soon becomes apparent: he's left a set plant that's clacked home, then white goes in behind green.

Trump 1-2 ROBERTSON (28-0)

Trying to break the pack off the blue, Judd slides off it and lands on nowt, so plays a decent safety; all Neil can do is roll up.

Trump 1-2 ROBERTSON (15-0)

Judd creams an opener into right corner and gets himself away, picking off loose reds.

around the tables

  • Tom Ford 0-3 Aaron Hill
  • Yuan Sijun 1-2 Shaun Murphy

Trump 1-2 ROBERTSON

Just as a ton looks inevitable, Judd runs out of position on 72; Neil stays in his seat, and the Ace is in the match.

Trump 0-2 ROBERTSON (61-0)

a nice blue beings Judd on to a red to corner, and from here, the frame is a certainty.

Trump 0-2 ROBERTSON (26-0)

Judd won't want to go three behind in a race to five – more insight as I get it – and he's now set fair.

Trump 0-2 ROBERTSON (12-0)

Neil misses to right corner so Judd gets away, and thetable is pretty inviting even if prime position has yet to be secured.

around the tables

  • Tom Ford 0-3 Aaron Hill
  • Yuan Sijun 1-2 Shaun Murphy

Trump 0-2 ROBERTSON

Nope, he stays on the edge and a relieved Thunder taps in to double his advantage.

Trump 0-1 ROBERTSON (60-60)

Judd tries a long double or treble but is he getting the quadruple? What a touch this'd be...

Trump 0-1 ROBERTSON (60-60)

Neil will have to shake the sickness eating up his insides and fast. He'll know he probably needs to win this from the front and 2-0 would've been a decent step on the road to doing that. Now, though, it might well be 1-1...

Trump 0-1 ROBERTSON (60-60)

Judd will feel he should've won this frame and he's right, he should, but he played a poor shot and couldn't get on to one of the last two reds. So Neil does the necessary ... and overcuts the black, leaving it in the jaws of left corner! I cannot believe he's done that! THIS GAME! So The Ace knocks it in and here comes a re-spot!

Trump 0-1 ROBERTSON (53-49)

He gets on to the brown nicely and the natural angle will take him to the blue ... he sinks it well and is going two in front.

Trump 0-1 ROBERTSON (53-40)

Neil snicks a goodun into left corner, sticks yellow into middle and floats down for the final red; he'll need the brown, not far off the baulk rail, and to get from it to blue, but at this stage you'd rather be him.

Trump 0-1 ROBERTSON (53-30)

Judd could take those last two reds on as a plant, but instead he tries a cannon, doesn't hit them hard enough, and leaves himself nothing but a thin cut across the table to the middle. So he has think, opts not to take on the pot, and instead sends one of the balls to the cushion.

Trump 0-1 ROBERTSON (40-30)

Judd accumulates and should finish the frame at this visit, though there are two reds close toone another that might get in the road.

trump 0-1 ROBERTSON (15-30)

Neil runs out of position so plays safe, but then offers Judd a long cut to the green bag and he smokes it home then snuggles in between brown and baulk cushion. Trouble for The Thunder, who plays into the reds generally, leaving plenty. It was a stinker of a snooker, it's true, but I'm not sure what he was trying to do there, and it should cost him plenty.

‘You could not make it up' - Trump flukes red against Robertson

Video credit: TNT Sports

trump 0-1 ROBERTSON (6-23)

Binning the developed black brings it back from baulk to the business end, and Neil is now a big favourite for this frame.

trump 0-1 ROBERTSON (6-6)

Neil misses to left corner and Judd tidies to the yellow bag, developing black off blue. But looking to rifle in a second red, the white jumps – he missed a ball like that yesterday in similar corcumstances – leaves one – and off goes Neil.

around the tables

  • Tom Ford 0-1 Aaron Hill
  • Yuan Sijun 1-0 Shaun Murphy

trump 0-1 ROBERTSON

Neil clears to the pink and hits the front.

trump 0-0 ROBERTSON (46-59)

Judd has to swerve to hit the red after a decent safety and nearly gets it safe but not quite. So Neil drains it, and needs yellow and green for the frame. Both are there for him.

trump 0-0 ROBERTSON (46-58)

Still we chase the final red, snookers laid and escaped.

trump 0-0 ROBERTSON (46-58)

Judd fouls, there's a break while Neil wonders if it's a free ball or not – it's not even close – then, put back in, he flukes the red. He had the run of the balls yesterday and is hard enough to beat when he doesn't ... but he can't force down the final red, meaning the chase is on. Already, this has the feel of an epic.

trump 0-0 ROBERTSON (39-54)

Judd tries to cannon the red on the side, assuming if it doesn't work out he'll be on the one on the top; he will not. So he plays safe, and this is going to be tight.

trump 0-0 ROBERTSON (29-54)

Having to chase a few pots, Neil hangs in the break ... but eventually misses red to midddle. Chance for Judd to steal, though there's a red on black cush and another not far off the side.

trump 0-0 ROBERTSON (20-46)

Neil quickly builds a lead and should clinch the frame from here.

trump 0-0 ROBERTSON (20-9)

The white doesn't come off the blue quite as Judd wants it to such that he's not on his next red. He does, though, play a decent safety, then another – so decent that Neil has no op;tion but to smoke a terrific long starter to right corner, soon breaking the back off the black.

trump 0-0 ROBERTSON (15-0)

Neil misses across the table to the yellow bag so Judd gets away to left corner and, the way he played against Joe O'Connor yesterday, the last thing he needs is a free starter.

and we're away

how will it go?

You've got to favour Judd, who's been in pehnomenal form and beat Neil 6-3 at the UK and the Saudi Masters; Neil beat Judd 6-4 in the Champion of Champions.

WILSON WILL BE TOUGH TO BEAT

He next faces McGill in the fourth round and has just played his best snooker of the week, hitting two centuries in getting past a tough opponent in Jak Jones.

ON THE OTHER TABLES...

Xiao Guodong thrashed Elliott Slessor 5-1 and Anthony McGill comfortably got past Zhang Anda 5-2.
Earlier, Barry Hawkins received a walkover after Ricky Walden was taken to hospital. A statement from the World Snooker Tour said: "Ricky Walden has withdrawn from the ongoing Machineseeker German Masters on medical grounds."

WILSON BEATS JONES 5-3

Jones got out of the snooker, but set Wilson up with an easy pot and, after he notched that, the Welshman offered his hand.

WILSON 4-3 JONES (63*-0)

A difficult cut on the red means Jones now requires a snooker. 63 points behind with 59 on the table - and he is snookered.

WILSON 4-3 JONES (57*-0)

Just three more pots will likely see Wilson move into the fourth round.

WILSON 4-3 JONES (39*-0)

Jones misses a thin cut and surely Wilson now will put the game to bed.

WILSON 4-3 JONES (38-0)

Bridging over a red, Wilson misses potting another into the right middle, catching the far bump. The match is not dead yet.

WILSON 4-3 JONES (27*-0)

Wilson collides with the green when attempting to lay a snooker beyond the baulk colors and left Jones a very gettable long red, but he thrashed at it and then landed back into the reds, leaving Wilson with a chance to get near the finishing line.

WILSON 4-3 JONES (26-0)

It looked like the beginning of the end but, after cutting in a red, Wilson comes too far up the table, adjacent to the baulk colours, and has to play a safety. It's a good one which elicits another four points, but the frame remains in the balance.

WILSON 4-3 JONES

Jones opts against playing on needing two snookers and now needs to win the next two frames to go through. You wouldn't rule it out in this topsy-turvy encounter.

WILSON 3-3 JONES (60*-11)

Excellent cueing potting the black with the cue ball under the side cushion pushes Wilson over the finishing line.

WILSON 3-3 JONES (16*-11)

A poor shot from Jones has let Wilson in again and this time ,with the spread of the reds, he should be punished.

WILSON 3-3 JONES (8-11)

Wilson with a reverse double and then very good black but he doesn't leave himself on another red and has to play safe.

WILSON 3-3 JONES (0-10)

Just the ten for Jones before he sends the cue ball up to the baulk end. Both players not wanting to give their opponent any easy chance in this high-quality encounter.

WILSON 3-3 JONES (0-4*)

Jones with a very good pot accurately sending a red from the baulk end into the bottom right pocket.

WILSON 3-3 JONES

Snookered on the yellow, he had to settle for the 103 and a level scoreline. Very happy he is with that too.

WILSON 2-3 JONES (103*-1)

The world champ superbly pots the last two reds, set in tricky positions, and now has his second century of the match and 493 in his career.

WILSON 2-3 JONES (55*-1)

Wilson is closing to the finishing line in the frame. Four more good pots and we will be level again.

WILSON 2-3 JONES (6*-1)

Jones tries a plant but sees the second red wobble in the jaws and stay out. Wilson then pots the red and knocks in a fantastic long blue, to set himself up with a chance.

WILSON 2-3 JONES (0-1)

Jones with a good opening pot but, with the cue ball righ next to the black ball, opts to play safe to baulk. Good discipline.

WILSON 2-3 JONES

A fantastic break of 123 from Jones puts him into the lead.

‘Playing with tons of confidence’ - Jones makes century against Wilson at German Masters

Video credit: TNT Sports

WILSON 2-2 JONES (3-73*)

A break of 65 has the frame in his possession and he could well be on for his first ton of the match.

WILSON 2-2 JONES (3-15*)

Jones pots a red over the bottom left corner and gets a lovely kiss off the pink, giving him the chance to put a dent in the frame.

WILSON 2-2 JONES (3-8)

Wilson misses a mid-range red into the bottom left pocket by a mile, hitting another red en route, but then Jones also misses a red into the middle you would expect him to notch.

WILSON 2-2 JONES (1*-8)

Jones is the first with his hand on the table but after rifling home a black, he can't quite squeeze a red intot he bottom left pocket and Wilson knocks home a mid-range red.

ON THE OTHER TABLES...

Xiao Guodong is now 3-1 up on Elliot Slessor, with Anthony McGill also 3-1 ahead of Zhang Anda.

WILSON 2-2 JONES

Jones pots down to the pink and the match is all square at the interval.

WILSON 2-1 JONES (38-43*)

A fantastic yellow into the right middle and the ball just stays the right side of the brown ball, setting Jones up on the green. Surely it is certain from here.

WILSON 2-1 JONES (38-41*)

A very good cannon off the pink (again to no applause) set up Jones, but he seemed distracted by noise elsewhere and has to settle for a snooker on the yellow, leaving the cue ball behind the black.

WILSON 2-1 JONES (38-20*)

"Shot of the match so far, no question."
Not my words, Alan Mcmanus'. Fantastic cueing as he potted a red in the pock from the bottom cushion near the left corner pocket. He has a chance now to take the frame.

WILSON 2-1 JONES (38-13)

Jones unlucky on two occasions, as he disturbed the black and red near the bottom left corner but saw them stay together, both unpottable, and then went into the pack and again did not leave a red on.

WILSON 2-1 JONES (38-2*)

Jones pots a red and leaves a good snooker behind the black and then Wilson leaves the Welshman with an easy red as he looks to steal another frame and go in level.

WILSON 2-1 JONES (38-0)

Wilson fails to add a big score and, after losing position, leaves the cue ball nestling in the pack.

WILSON 2-1 JONES (21*-0)

Wilson misses the blue and leaves a simple plant on for Jones, with the second red over the bottom right pocket, but he misses - seemingly distracted by someone in the crowd, the referee has a consoling word to the fuming Welshman.

WILSON 2-1 JONES (7*-0)

Jones misses a long pot and invites Wilson to start the scoring in the fourth. Off the blue, Wilson opens the reds and then plays a tough pot cueing down on the red from the side cushion. He is right at the top of his game now.

ON THE OTHER TABLES...

Anthony McGill is leading Zhang Anda 2-1 and Xiao Guodong leads Elliot Slessor by the same score.

WILSON 2-1 JONES

A brilliant break of 112, ending with the black going from the spot into the green pocket. Not an easy break at all there, having to shift balls off the side cushion. That's why he's the world champ.

WILSON 1-1 JONES (70*-31)

He is so good at those tough swerves close to the object ball and another good red ensures he will take the third frame.

WILSON 1-1 JONES (56*-31)

Wilson with a good positional shot off the black, no clap from the fans though, getting a red off the side cushion and thatwill get him pretty close to winning the frame.

WILSON 1-1 JONES (1*-31)

Oh, that's an awful error. Jones tried to get position off the yellow then attempted a tough long red, only to hit the blue en route to the yellow pocket. And he leaves Wilson on.

WILSON 1-1 JONES (0-20*)

A snooker from Jones brings about three fouls, before Wilson his the red but leaves an easy pot on for Jones who has a good chance now.

WILSON 1-1 JONES

A good break of 80 will give Jones a bit of confidence and remind Wilson he cannot afford to be so careless with the cue ball.

WILSON 1-0 JONES (24-53*)

Jones gets the first half-century on the board and is set, surely, to level the score.

WILSON 1-0 JONES (24-9*)

It couldn't have gone worse on the long yellow for Jones, he misses it than comes back and opens the reds up and the black for Wilson to strike. But he misses an easy black this time! Now it is Jones' chance again.

WILSON 1-0 JONES (23-1*)

Another good red from Wilson but he misses the ensuing brown and gives Jones a chance with the reds nicely spread, albeit the black out of commission.

WILSON 1-0 JONES (22-0)

His control around the black spot is not at its usual standard at present - and a break ends early once again.

WILSON 1-0 JONES (6*-0)

A poor break leaves Wilson a mid-range red to get started in the second frame.

WILSON 1-0 JONES

Jones misses a thin red and leaves Wilson a simple long red into the bottom left pocket, which he duly does and his opponent signals that will be the end of the opener.

WILSON 0-0 JONES (59-12*)

Wilson misses cutting a red on the black spot and Jones now has a chance. He came to the table 48 points behind but with 51 remaining on the table.

WILSON 0-0 JONES (52*-11)

The frame goes on as Wilson fauls to get position on the reds. He does the next best thing and gets a snooker though and while Jones brushes a red, he leaves it on.

WILSON 0-0 JONES (36*-11)

Wilson now looks set to put the frame beyond Jones, with four more reds in eminently pottable positions.

WILSON 0-0 JONES (30-11)

Once more Wilson can't take advantage with a substantial break. He looks in far better nick, but can't make it pay yet.

WILSON 0-0 JONES (24*-11)

Another red and colour from Jones but he then misses a red just further up the cushion from the bottom left pocket and Wilson pots another good long red.

WILSON 0-0 JONES (23-5)

Jones with a nice long pot and follows up with a brown, but can't get position on a tough cluster of reds, overrunning by quite some margin.

WILSON 0-0 JONES (23-0)

He was a little fortunate initially hitting the bump by the left middle after potting a blue which sets him up well but two shots later he then loses position and is forced to play safe off the yellow.

WILSON 0-0 JONES (11*-0)

An unfortunate plant sees Jones pot the black when attempting a safety and Wilson then pots a tough long red clean as a whistle.

WILSON 0-0 JONES (3-0)

The world champ is first on the board with a long pot - and he was well-placed on the yellow to set up an opportunity to get on the other reds, but he missed a red into the bottom left pocket, leaving nothing on.
