Grand Prix Germany: Maverick Vinales withdraws with shoulder injury, Franco Morbidelli suffers 'severe contusion' during Sprint race

Grand Prix Germany has posed a problem for riders throughout Saturday's racing. First, Maverick Vinales dislocated and fractured a shoulder, forcing him out of the rest of the weekend, and later in the Sprint race, Franco Morbidelli suffered his own heavy fall, and had to be taken to a nearby hospital for further checks on an injury to his left collarbone.

Franco Morbidelli was the second MotoGP rider taken to hospital on Saturday, after he crashed in the Sprint at Grand Prix Germany.
KTM Tech3 rider Maverick Vinales already had to go to hospital due to a dislocated and fractured shoulder he suffered in the Q2 section of qualifying, with the injury ruling him out of the weekend’s action, if not more.
However, VR46’s Morbidelli suffered his own race-ending crash when he ran aground at Turn 8.
The Italian was flung into the gravel with such force that his racing suit opened up, and after a visit to the medical circuit at the track, he was sent to a hospital in Chemnitz.
He had looked in good shape until that point, having reached second place after an error from polesitter Marc Marquez, who later reclaimed top spot for victory.
Morbidelli suffered an injury to his left collarbone, and he was due to have further examinations to discover the extent of the problem.
A statement from VR46 confirmed: "After being examined at the circuit medical centre, Franky was diagnosed with a severe contusion to the left collarbone and will be transferred to Chemnitz Hospital for further evaluation."
Earlier, Tech3 Racing also provided an update on social media following Vinales' crash.
The statement read: "Following his Q2 crash this morning, Maverick Vinales was brought to the medical centre.
"He had a dislocated left shoulder, which was immediately put back in place at the track, but the doctors suspected a small fracture. The fracture was confirmed at the local hospital.
"Maverick will be unfit for the remainder of the German Grand Prix, while we await for further updates on the recovery process.
"We will then understand whether he will be with us or not next week in Brno. Get well soon, Mav', we'll be waiting for you!"
Jack Miller also suffered a crash during qualifying, as riders struggled throughout the day with heavy rain and standing water.
Marquez predicted that Sunday’s longer race could pose an even tougher challenge.
