Grand Prix Germany: Michael Laverty defends 'quirky' Sachsenring track as eight riders fall in chaotic race

Fabio Di Giannantonio, Pedro Acosta and Johann Zarco were among the riders to suffer crashes in a turbulent race at Grand Prix Germany. Eight riders fell in total, with just nine managing to cross the finish line behind Marc Marquez. "They have outgrown it, but they are still able to race here and you can still get great racing across the board," said Michael Laverty of the Sachsenring track.

Michael Laverty believes the Sachsenring track at Grand Prix Germany has been "outgrown" by MotoGP riders, but is still fit for purpose.
Marc Marquez completed the double as he followed up his Sprint race victory with a dominant win in Sunday's event, extending his championship lead with a ninth win on the bounce.
After Maverick Vinales and Franco Morbidelli were injured during Saturday's sprint, the track's condition came under fire before eight fell in Sunday's main race.
It is the first time since 2011 in Australia that only 10 riders managed to cross the finish line, according to TNT Sports commentary team, but expert Laverty praised its "unique" and "quirky" features.
"It's a unique track, quirky, the bikes are 300 brake horsepower, and the straights are a little bit too short for them, but they're mapped in terms of torque, in terms of how much horsepower is down there, and it's up to the riders to manage it," he explained.
"I do think it's circumstantial today, the fact that we had the overnight rain more than the bikes outgrowing [the track]."

Although Laverty can understand that it is a small track and therefore accidents are bound to happen, it is still capable of producing "great racing".
"We talked a little bit about this yesterday off air, about how we go to Silverstone and people say Donington's too small for MotoGP bikes... this is smaller than Donington Park," he said.
"When you watch superbikes around the glorious Donington Park this weekend, you think, 'This is smaller'.
"Yes, they have outgrown it, but they are still able to race here and you can still get great racing across the board.
"Sometimes when you've got a rider like Marc who stretches out that gap, it can make the race a little bit dull as he did today, but you have to appreciate the greatness on display with someone who can do that to the best in the world."
