Grand Prix Germany: Marc Marquez overcomes tricky conditions to record another pole position as closest rivals struggle – ‘I was confident’

Ducati Lenovo rider Marc Marquez heads the world championship standings and has every chance of extending his lead as his nearest rivals struggled in qualifying at Grand Prix Germany on Saturday morning. Marquez grabbed pole, with his younger brother Alex down in sixth, and former world champion Francesco Bagnaia was 11th quickest ahead of the two races to come.

A "confident" Marc Marquez was quickest in qualifying as Maverick Vinales and other riders suffered in inclement conditions.
Poor weather was anticipated for at least the first half of the weekend, and many of the competitors struggled to stay on the bike.
That was true even for Ducati Lenovo rider Marquez, who had a wobble of his own, but nevertheless he was the fastest around the track come the end of Q2.
Vinales (Red Bull KTM), Franco Morbidelli (Pertamini VR46 Ducati) and Jack Miller (Pramac Yamaha) all went into the gravel, and Vinales headed for a medical check to see if he was fit to compete in Saturday afternoon’s Sprint race, shown live on TNT Sports and discovery+.
Yesterday’s quickest rider, Morbidelli’s stable mate Fabio Di Giannantonio, slipped down the pack and was eight quickest overall, while Marquez’s Ducati Lenovo team-mate Francesco Bagnaia was in 11th spot as his poor season continued.
Joining Marquez on the front row is Castrol Honda’s Johann Zarco, with Marco Bezzecchi (Aprilia) in third spot.

The younger Marquez brother, Alex (BK8 Gresini Ducati), finished sixth quickest, with Pedro Acosta (Red Bull KTM) in fifth and Morbidelli fourth.
Speaking after the session, Marquez seemed relatively comfortable.
He said: "I was confident because all the options were working well with our bike. I’d already been out with the soft, but I want to find out if it was possible with the medium, but it was difficult to get the temperature on the right side, so there was some movement on Turn 11.
"I did a good lap, then I cooled down, and said maybe if we’re in pole position, we don’t need to take more risks, but then I saw the last laps were coming closer and closer and I pushed on that last lap.
"The target was to be on the front row, pole position is much better."
