Garcia halves Herbert lead, Ballester hits 60

Sergio Garcia's 65 cut Lucas Herbert's lead to three shots ahead of Sunday's final round, but the highlight of Moving Day was an exceptional 60 from Spanish young sensation Josele Ballester's 12-under par round.
Ballester now lies third along with Bryson DeChambeau, Dean Burmester and Scott Vincent - who himself hit a ten-under par 62.
Although DeChambeau and co have theoretically given themselves a chance, they remain 12 eight shots adrift of Herbert who shows little sign of giving up his lead.
Garcia played as good a round as he has all year and it involved the escapology he was known for early in his career.
On the 13th after hitting to the edge of the water, he took his socks and shoes off - like Jean van de Velde famously did in the 1999 Open Championship - and hit a shot near enough to the green to allow himself an up and down for par.
Both leaders had putts for birdie on the last where, in a moment which may prove pivotal, Herbert missed while Garcia's sunk.
What is certain is that an enthralling Round 4 has been set up as the pair go head-to-head again.

Garcia reduces overnight lead to three

Herbert's putt stayed just right of the hole, but Garcia rolled his home. A fantastic end to a thrilling round of golf.

Both have chances of birdie on last

So does Richard Bland, who is back on -8. Three fantastic approaches within ten feet or so from the hole.

Herbert disappointed to go to 21-under

He had a 15-footer to eagle at 17 but just leaves it beside the hole. Garcia also gets a birdie.

The leading two still out there

They are on the fairway on the 17th, while the others are in the clubhouse.

Ballester just misses long putt

The 22-year-old can't make history so has to settle for the round of the tournament (and maybe the year) so far, with a 12-under par 60.

Bryson and Rahm end rounds with birdies

They finish on the first, with Rahm holing from off the green and then DeChambeau putting home for a third straight birdie for a round of 64 and a share of third place.

Vincent holes bunker shot to go joint-third

He is ten under with one hole remaining. On a normal day this would seem an unbelievable round.

Sergio's putting touch has deserted him

That one on the 16th was unlucky as it looked in before lipping out. Now he is four behind Herbert.

Can Ballester birdie the ninth for a 59?

He just missed a birdie on the eighth but doing so on the ninth, his last hole, would see him break 60, an achievement this round deserves.

Rahm drops a shot

He misses a six-footer to move back to 11-under, two behind Ballester. And DeChambeau birdies to move to -12.

Ballester with yet another birdie

Four birdies out of the last five leave him TWELVE under for the day. He was in trouble on the eighth but his pitch left him a six-footer he was never going to miss today.

Herbert lead extends to three

After dramaticallly saving his par on the 13th, Garcia makes a bogey on the par-three 14th.

Sergio putts monster to save par

There were long odds of him doing this when he was going for a paddle in bare feet.

Garcia done a Van de Velde!

With better results. He took his shoes and socks off to stand in the water and hit a ball just lying dry and put it back onto the fairway.

Rahm joins Ballester in third

A fine tee shot gives him a 12-footer for a birdie and he slots it home.

Ballester with another birdie!

He is ELEVEN under for the day with four holes to play. And he is alone now on 12-under for the tournament.

Herbert is back to 20-under

He makes a great up and down from a very tricky position by the 12th green. Garcia also birdies though, more conventially, knocking home a four-footer for his four.

Ballester up to third

He has joined Dean Burmester and Jon Rahm in third after his eighth birdie (along with an eagle).

Ballester nine-under for the round

And he has six holes to go! He has moved up to tie DeChambeau and Scott Vincent for joint-fifth.

Garcia back up to 17-under

He slots a 15-footer on the first hole of the back nine to bring the lead back to two.

Garcia drops shot at ninth

For the second straight round he follows a birdie on the eighth with a bogey on the ninth.

And now the lead is two

Garcia rolls a five-footer home to get closer to Herbert than anyone has been since the end of the first round.

Bogey for Herbert

The first blotch on his record since his seventh hole of the first round, as he hits a five on the par-four seventh. The lead is only three over Garcia now.

Another fine bunker shot gets Herbert to 20-under

It was a feature of his first two rounds. Landing in the bunker on par fives and leaving himself virtual gimme putts - and he has just done it again on the sixth. Garcia also sinks a putt for birdie.

Sergio birdies the fifth

His fourth of the day. And he has the part-five sixth next. Herbert just leads by four now.

Bryson and Rahm join Detry

These three are inspiring each other to play better and better. They are all on 10-under.

Detry moves into third

He might not have an eagle like his two playing partners, but he is five-under for the round already and moves one clear of Rahm and DeChambeau.

Garcia moves to 14-under

He is now three-under for the day and Herbert's lead is down to five.

Rahm close to holing bunker shot

It would have been a second eagle for him, as it is he must settle for a birdie.

Leishman gets an eagle

He dinks the ball from the edge of the green on the sixth into the hole for a three. He is now level with DeChambeau on 9-under.

Herbert moves to 19-under

His lead is back to six. His tee shot was not quite as good as Rahm's on the fourth but he left himself a six-footer which he sinks.

Another birdie for Bryson

He leaves himself a four-footer for birdie on the fifth and that putting it away puts him in third place on his own.

Early leaderboard

Herbert -18
Garcia -13
Bland -8
DeChambeau -8
Detry -8
Rahm -8
Casey -7
Leishman -7

Herbert and Garcia both birdie second

Herbert's drive was errant but his third shot was chipped to a yard from the hole. Garcia had only slightly further to make his four.

Detry makes third birdie

A fantastic approach to the fourth leaves him a five footer which sees him go birdie-birdie-birdie and level with Rahm and DeChambeau on 8-under.

Garcia birdies the first

He sunk a 15-footer to move to 12-under, reducing Herbert's lead to five as the Aussie pars the first. Bland also got a three on the first.

Both birdie the third hole!

DeChambeau sunk a huge putt across the green to secure his birdie. They are both on 8-under, a mere nine shots behind Herbert. Detry got a second successive birdie. The three are a combined 8-under after 3 holes!

Rahm so close to hole-in-one

He has a tap in for an eagle-birdie start.

Rahm follows with eagle of his own!

He sinks a 20 foot putt for his three. What a start to the third round! Moving day living up to its name already. Detry, playing with them, gets a birdie but is pretty overshadowed.

DeChambeau starts with an eagle!

He drains a chip and run from the edge of the green. He is now equal third! At this rate he could reel in Herbert by the turn...

The Shotgun Start is Underway

Rahm and DeChambeau both hit their drives straight down the fairway on the par-five second. They had slow starts in the first two days, maybe not today.

Today's Groupings

Rahm and DeChambeau together!

Herbert set for US Open

More good news for a LIV Golfer...Lucas Herbert should play at the US Open barring a disastrous last 36 holes.

Good news for Detry

Thomas Detry is among the cluster of players on five-under, including DeChambeau and Rahm, and has been given a fillip ahead of Round 3 with the news he will play at next week's US PGA Championship.

Let’s revel in Herbert’s second round one more time

A round of golf you’d think he will never forget - though we might have thought that about Round 1.
