Barrichello has had gearbox problems and he looks very frustrated as he slips into P19. It means that Kovalainen in the Lotus has made it through to the second round of qualifying...

Session over - who misses out? The last few drivers coming home...

Did Mercedes need to use the option tyres? It doesn't look like it. It's a set wasted for later in the weekend.

Schumacher goes top with a 1:22.960. Di Resta out of the dreaded bottom seven and up to 10th with a 1:24.332.

If you're not out on track now you're not in time - the Ferraris are out, as is Hamilton. Button stays in, as do the Red Bulls. Heidfeld misses out.
2'
Maldonado puts in a sharp time to nip ahead of Webber, but D'Ambrosio makes no improvement from 22nd.

Petrov half a second quickest in first place - it doesn't mean a great deal given that it's on different tyres from Webber, but it ensures that Petrov will reach the next round.
4'
Petrov fastest through the first sector, Schumacher in ninth has also opted to go out again...
5'
Petrov, sitting 11th, doesn't feel comfortable enough where he is and has ventured out on the soft tyres.
6'
Kobayashi and Perez emerge - both looking to do a sole run on soft tyres. Kobayashi just four-tenths behind Webber in second, while Perez is a few-tenths further down in sixth. Both should be safe.
7'
Heidfeld's car still doesn't have its floor on - looks like that will have a knock-on effect on the battle to reach Q2. Frustrating day for the Renault man.
8'
Alguersuari's Toro Rosso team-mate Buemi is also on soft tyres and sweeps around to post a 1:23.942 - comfortable enough, and he takes P2.
9'
Looks like Alguersuari has been the first to commit to soft tyres - he splits the Red Bulls with a 1:24.069.
10'
Wobble for Hamilton - he runs just wid on the chicane at Turns 7/8, but still gets round in the fourth-best time of the afternoon so far.
10'
Webber extends his advantage - 1:23.619 - a very strong showing from the Australian so far.
11'
Vettel tucks in three-tenths behind Webber in second place, but the duo for the time being half a second clear of the field. Alonso up to fifth with a 1:25.8.
12'
Webber records a 1:23.9 - it's on hard tyres, but it seems unlikely he'll need to do any more to reach Q2.

Button posts a 1:24.708 to give himself a healthy lead at the top for now - but we've yet to see the best of Red Bull, Mercedes, Ferrari or his team-mate Hamilton.
14'
The hard tyres evidently taking a couple of laps to warm up - Button in the 1:30s on his first lap round but looking set to go tp with his next effort.
15'
Petrov down to a 1:26.1 - but the big guns are making their way out - Vettel on track in hard tyres, hoping his time will be good enough without resorting to the soft compounds.
16'
Petrov looks like he'll be stronger in this second lap of his run - half a second up on his first split time already.
