Brazil v Norway - World Cup result as Erling Haaland double earns Vikings first quarter-final to send five-time champions home

Erling Haaland’s brace helped Norway stun five-time champions Brazil, as the Scandinavian outfit booked themselves a first World Cup quarter-final thanks to a 2-1 victory in New Jersey.

The Samba Boys could have taken an early lead when VAR intervened to award a penalty for a rash tackle on Matheus Cunha by Kristoffer Ajer but Bruno Guimaraes saw his poor spot-kick saved by Orjan Nyland.

The goalkeeper also made an excellent stop from Vinicius Jr, while his opposite number Alisson denied Haaland and Martin Odegaard as deadlock remained intact heading into the break.

Substitute Endrick wasted a huge opening less than a minute after coming on just before the hour mark, while Rayan also had a low drive saved.

And Carlo Ancelotti's men were made to pay as Andreas Schjelderup teed up Haaland with an inviting cross that the striker converted with a towering header that found the bottom corner.

Brazil nearly equalised when a deflection off Ajer required another outstanding stop by Nyland but their race was run when Haaland grabbed his second with a glorious finish from 18 yards.

It means the Samba Boys, who pulled one back when Neymar converted from the spot in the tenth minute of added time after Leo Ostigard was penalised for an elbow on Casemiro, are knocked out at the last-16 stage for the first time since 1990.

Norway are playing just their fourth World Cup and, having being eliminated at the last-16 stage in 1938 and 1998, are now into their first quarter-final.

Five-time winners Brazil meanwhile are dumped out at this stage for the first time since 1990. They had reached eight successive quarter-finals before this tournament!

Casemiro swings a cross into the box but Nyland comes and claims. He then pumps the ball forward and the referee finally blows the full-time whistle.

It's game over. It's history for Norway. Their first World Cup quarter-final. And they thoroughly deserved it.

And who's next? England or Mexico. Beware.

Neymar, who is likely to never play at a World Cup again, takes it. After some words with Nyland, the forward steps up and slots into the bottom corner.

He then runs up to the goalkeeper pumping his chest, but there is surely no time for an equaliser.

Ostigard goes up with Casemiro, who gets caught with a trailing elbow. There's nowhere else for the defender's arm to go, but the officials are certain it is a spot kick

GAME.OVER. Norway are heading through to their first World Cup quarter-final, and it's Erling Haaland who is their hero once again.

The striker sets himself up in acres of space outside the area, and then drills a left-footed shot into the far corner. Alisson dives, but cannot get anything on it.

They have plenty of strikers on the field but just cannot find a way past the Norway defence at the moment!

Wow! Nyland makes his best save of the night so far, and it comes from his own man! The ball comes off Ajer and the goalkeeper has to back-pedal and somehow fingertip away to safety, just as it looked like it was dropping into the top corner.

Brazil then recycle the ball and it ends in Casemiro crossing right through the six yard box. Neymar was waiting to tap in.

They force a couple of left-wing corners, both taken by Neymar and both headed away.

Neymar then shows some quick feet in the area as he chops past a couple of defenders, but tries one trick too many and gets dispossessed

That is the 14th successive competitive international in which Haaland has scored. Which, let's be honest, is just mad.

It simply had to be him, didn't it? Brilliant play by Schjelderup, who gets down the left and bends an inviting ball into a dangerous area.

The 'keeper can't come for it, but Haaland can. He wants it more than the defender and muscles his way to it, converting with a towering header that he flicks into the bottom corner. We have lift off!

Bruno Guimaraes, who missed that penalty in the first half, comes off. Ederson Silva is on in his place.

A fast Norway counter-attack leads to Haaland coolly playing in the substitute, and he lets rip with a fierce shot towards the near post. It's a comfortable enough save for Alisson, but he makes it all the same
