HEAD-TO-HEAD: This is the third competitive showdown between the two teams. The first two finished goalless during qualifying for Euro 2008. However, Croatia ran out 3-1 winners in a friendly in Rostov-on-Don in November 2015.

Their last success was against Hungary in 1966, which is the only time they have reached the last four. Indeed, this is Russia's first World Cup quarter final as 'Russia.' But they did get to this stage in four consecutive tournaments from 1958 to 1970 as the Soviet Union.
