Here is how the opening goal went, with Roma captain Pellegrini scoring one he will treasure.

The skipper has been booed by his own fans at times this season after struggling for form and even to get a place in the starting lineup - this was his first start after five benchings in a row. He stood up when it counted, and was cheered off by the Romanisti when he was replaced in the second half.

Ranieri got off to a difficult start when he decided to leave retirement for another day and take the helm at Roma for a third time, despite awful form and a sour atmosphere at his boyhood club.

Slowly but surely, though, he has developed a style that suits his players and the results have come. Sunday's derby was akin to the Jose Mourinho Roma sides of old; formidably clinical when it mattered, unbreachable when defending deep in numbers and with more than a few tricks up their sleeves to frustrate their opponents.

Ranieri's side have now won five of their last seven games. That is one more than they managed in the entire rest of the season combined under Daniele De Rossi and Ivan Juric.

There is every chance they have left themselves with too much work to do in their hopes of UEFA Champions League qualification, but Ranieri has certainly put smiles back on faces on the red side of Rome and can now look towards a hopeful future rather than back at a difficult recent past.

Lorenzo Pellegrini and Alexis Saelemaekers scored inside the opening 18 minutes as Roma earned a 2-0 win over bitter rivals Lazio in a heated Rome Derby.

Lazio came into the fixture as the form side, leading their neighbours by seven places and 15 points in the Serie A table, but they found themselves behind after just 10 minutes when Giallorossi skipper Pellegrini curled home to mark his return to the starting side in style.

Saelemaekers finished off a devastating quick break from the Lupi to make it two and leave Lazio rattled, but Marco Baroni's men soon began to dominate possession.

However, try as they might, the Biancocelesti could not find a way past the impressive Mile Svilar in goal for Roma, firing 13 shots at goal to no avail, with the Belgian saving six of them.

There were nine yellow cards shared between the two sides on a typically feisty evening, before a stoppage-time scuffle saw Lazio striker Taty Castellanos earn a red card.

The result moves Roma back into 10th on 23 points, 12 behind their rivals in fourth place.

A second ball is thrown onto the pitch by one of the Roma subs as Lazio look to attack, and as soon as you know it everyone associated with either team appears to have piled into a big ruckus. No idea how that started, proceeded or finished, but Rovella is being dragged away screaming at someone...

The noise levels are rising in the Curva Sud as full-time approaches. There will be an additional five minutes to play.

Noslin and Pellegrini, both attack-minded players, are on for Zaccagni and Tavares for the final few minutes.

Full-time is creeping nearer, and Lazio look no closer to scoring. They are about to throw on a couple more players.

And the game continues to play out as it has for almost the entire second half, with Lazio camped in Roma's half but struggling to find a way through. They need something very special now to get back into this.

Another Lazio change, with Lazzari a more attack-minded right back than Marusic.

He's been Lazio's biggest weapon tonight and again beats a defender like he isn't there, this time El Shaarawy, before firing a low shot across goal and wide of the far post.

Lazio are pushing and pushing but can't get the ball over the line! This time it's cleared just in time from a goalmouth scramble. A corner comes in, but is cleared out to...Lazio goalkeeper Provedel at halfway. Can Roma survive 15 minutes of this? So far, so good for their defensive efforts.
