Juventus confirmer departure of manager Max Allegri days after Coppa Italia win

Juventus have sacked manager Max Allegri days after the team won the Coppa Italia.

The trophy was the club’s first silverware in two seasons, and with Inter Milan the runaway winners of Serie A, pressure had been mounting on Juve’s manager.

Reports had suggested he would be replaced in the summer, but a recent controversy may have precipitated an earlier exit.

As well as tensions with the club’s executives, he reportedly threatened a journalist. And on Friday afternoon, the Italian side confirmed his departure.

A statement on their official website read: “Juventus announces that it has relieved Massimiliano Allegri of his position as head coach of the men's first team.

“The exoneration follows certain behaviours during and after the Coppa Italia final that the club deemed incompatible with the values of Juventus and the behaviour that those who represent it should have.

“It ends a period of collaboration, which began in 2014, restarted in 2021 and ended, after the previous three seasons together, with the Italian Cup final.

“The club wishes Massimiliano Allegri good luck in his future endeavours.”

While Allegri had come under increasing pressure, the 56-year-old is one of the club's most successful managers in their history.

He first took over in 2014 before leaving in 2019, winning Serie A five times in a row, as well as losing in two UEFA Champions League finals.

Upon his return in 2021, he was unable to compete with the two Milan teams and Napoli in the race for Serie A, and this season secured Champions League football after a seventh-placed finish in the 2022/23 season.

Bologna manager Thiago Motta has been linked with the vacancy in Turin ahead of next season.
