AS Roma owner Dan Friedkin looks set to buy Everton after reportedly agreeing a deal in principle for the club.
Friedkin, chairman of The Friedkin Group and whose net worth is estimated at £4.8 billion, took over the Serie A side in August 2020.
Reports of a deal being accepted, according to multiple sources, follow the expiration of 777 Partners’ period of exclusivity, which ended on May 31.
It is claimed that Moshiri may now grant exclusivity to Friedkin within 48 hours.
The British-Iranian businessman held a 49.9% stake in Everton from February 2016 until January 2022, when he increased his holding to 94.1%.
But after several fan protests and posting financial losses for five years in a row, Moshiri agreed a deal with 777 Partners for the whole of his stake in the club in September 2023.
The deal eventually collapsed as 777 reportedly struggled to meet the Premier League’s criteria for a takeover, with chief executive Richard Masters reiterating the league’s “very clear” conditions last month.
Masters told MPs in a discussion on the government’s football governance bill: “The Premier League is very clear the conditions that have to be met by 777 if it wishes to become owner of Everton.
“At the moment, because the takeover has not been confirmed, I’ll leave it to the committee [of MPs] to make its own conclusions as to where we are with that."
Moshiri has invested almost £650 million in transfers at Everton, as well as helping to oversee and finance their new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, which is expected to be completed in 2025.
