Ruben Amorim hails win over Liverpool as 'biggest' of his Manchester United tenure as Harry Maguire reacts to 'embarrassing' stat

Ruben Amorim branded his side's 2-1 win over Liverpool as the "biggest" of his Manchester United tenure, while Harry Maguire reacted to an "embarrassing" stat after the victory. The England defender rescued all three points in the closing stages of the fixture at Anfield. The win was Manchester United's first at the ground since 2016 and moved them up to ninth in the Premier League table.

Ruben Amorim believes that Manchester United’s 2-1 win over Liverpool was the biggest victory of his tenure at the club so far.
The Red Devils took an early lead through Bryan Mbeumo, but Arne Slot’s side appeared to have earned themselves a point after Cody Gakpo equalised with 12 minutes of normal time remaining.
However, Harry Maguire secured a memorable win for the visitors six minutes later after heading Bruno Fernandes’ cross past Giorgi Mamardashvili.
The win will relieve some of the pressure on Amorim after a difficult start to the 2025/2026 campaign, but he now wants his team to focus on their next Premier League fixture against Brighton.
"I think that was the biggest win in my time at Manchester United," Amorim, who succeeded Erik ten Hag as manager of Manchester United in November 2024, told Sky Sports.
"It means a lot today, but tomorrow it won't mean a lot. It's three points and it's a good victory.

"We fought for every ball, we lost our composure in the second half, but the spirit was there and that is the most important thing. If you have the spirit, you can win any game.
"It was a good day and now I am concerned about Brighton. I will enjoy it but let's focus on Brighton.
"We just saw the game and knew how important our set-pieces are and the guys that have more experiences are on in the beginning.
"Every time we play in this environment well, if you block well in the beginning, you can feel the defence turning, and we feel that in our stadium and all the big teams feel that. A good win.
"It will give us more confidence through the week and pleasure to our fans. They deserve it and that is in our hands.
"This is in the past. Now it's time to look at the future."
The triumph was United’s first win at Anfield since 2016.
It also ensured that United secured their first back-to-back wins in the Premier League this season, following on from their 2-0 victory against Sunderland earlier this month.
Match-winner Maguire admitted that United’s inability to record back-to-back wins in the Premier League had become embarrassing.
"It's embarrassing, really," he told BBC Match of the Day. "It's not a stat that we should even be speaking about because it is an embarrassing stat to have.
"Now that's out of the way, let's try and make it three [wins] on Saturday against Brighton, because we have to start putting a bit more consistency together.
"The last three or four years we'd put in a performance like this and the following game we come down again.
"We have set a benchmark, there are a lot of areas we can do more, we were hanging on there and defending for the last 30 minutes or so. We'll analyse it.
"The manager strives for perfection, so I'm sure he will want us to play better than we did in the second half.
"Great fight, big spirit, big win, but again we have to go again."

Slot: No excuses for defeat

Liverpool have now lost four consecutive games across all competitions, leaving them four points behind leaders Arsenal in the Premier League.
Their poor run of form has also seen them lose to Crystal Palace, Galatasaray, and Chelsea.
Slot insists he has no excuse for their recent run of poor form and called on his players to focus.
"If you play a United side that comes with a low block and comes with long balls you know it is going to be difficult," he told Sky Sports. "It makes it even more difficult if it is [1-0] after one minute.

Slot: Liverpool have not lost confidence yet amid losing run

"I think if you lose a game after you have lost four, you would have more emotion, but there is no excuses.
"We need to focus on ourselves. We had so many chances and we should score more. We should have defended better than we did.
"I brought on substitutions to turn the game around and they created more opportunities. But you don't have the same structure in defending and set-pieces.
"It is a difficult moment because you know how it works in football. The main thing is, is that the players stick together."
