Liverpool 1-2 Manchester United result – Late Harry Maguire header wins it for visitors as champions lose again

Harry Maguire's 84th-minute header gave United a colossal win, their first at Anfield in almost a decade, and secured three points in successive games for the first time under Ruben Amorim. Liverpool, meanwhile, find themselves having lost four times in a row, and now sit four points behind league-leaders Arsenal.

United made a terrific start, Amad Diallo curving a lovely pass into the path of Bryan Mbeumo, who ran off Virgil van Dijk and expertly finished past Giorgi Mamardashvili with just 62 seconds on the clock. 

The goal was not without controversy, though. Earlier in the move, Alexis Mac Allister was caught by Van Dijk and went down with a head injury, but referee Michael Oliver allowed the game to continue and the visitors crafted a fine opener.

The tempo did not let up. Both sides created chances – Cody Gakpo twice hit the post while Senne Lammens saved well from Alexander Isak while, for United, Bruno Fernandes also struck the woodwork.

Liverpool were dominant after the break as United sat back, and it was no surprise when the pressure eventually told. Gakpo tapped home on 78 minutes after good initial work from Van Dijk and a pinpoint cross from Federico Chiesa.

The visitors, though, offered a constant threat on the counter and after winning a corner down the left, first Mbeumo's shot was blocked before Bruno Fernandes' volleyed a brilliant first-time cross for Maguire, who cushioned a header into the corner to seal a huge victory.

I daresay the denizens of N5 are enjoying their Sunday afternoon. Arsenal top the table by three from Man City, with Liverpool and Bournemouth a further point adrift; United move up to the lofty heights of ninth.

United win at Anfield for the first time in a decade; win consecutive games for the first time under Ruben Amorim; and Liverpool lose for the fourth match in a row! This could be a colossal match for both teams!

Ekitike helpfully slides in, he wears the foul, and United are nearly there.

The players they signed this summer mean that is no longer the case, and the energy of Mbeumo and Cunha is a major reason they're in front here.

If his team can hang on here, perhaps it'll change things for him and them; if Liverpool lose a fourth straight game, having spent £500m or so, people might begin to wonder what's going on.

And this time,United deal with it more calmly, Lammens eventually diving on a loose ball. His composure is making a huge difference to a still-dodgy defence.

They'll not be quiet and, as I type, Frimpong and Cunha contest a high ball. Cunha wins it, but the ref appraises a corner; consecutive miscues from Mbeumo and Dorgu, classing United-under-pressure defending, look dicey, but there are no attackers nearby to profit.

United sent on Mainoo and Yoro for Shaw and Bruno; Liverpool tried Frimpong for Salah, a telling change. back to the immediate present, if such a thing exists, the champions win a corner ... which Cunha, who's been excellent today, brings clear.

Mbeumo curls over a lovely outswinger, De Ligt is up ... and he powers over the top. That was a decent chance to win it.

Frimpong teases Dorgu down the right, shimmying and waving feet before nipping a years and standing up a dolly for Gakpo, six yards out ... and somehow, he heads wide, and wide by a bit too! Liverpool can't have hoped for a better chance than that.

This is not a joke! The corner goes short, to the edge, Mbeumo swinging a terrific effort that hits Jones on the back – it might've gone in otherwise. The lose ball arrives at Bruno, out on the left, and he volleys a gorgeous cross towards the far post, where none other than Harrance Maguire – who missed a sitter to win this fixture last season – cushions a header across Mamardashviili and into the far corner! What do the champions have left?!

He drives into the box, daring Szboszlai to challenge him ... but he sensibly holds off, and the shot is deflected behind for a corner.

I=m not sure he's any other options, and status quo isn't working.

I'm not sure how they do it without a proper midfield, and it's hard to see how Liverpool don't score if the next 15 or so minutes look like the last.

Wirtz has grown into this and, after Van DSijk wins a decent challenge against Mbeumo, he pokes about the edge, eventually sending a pass wide, Chiesa's low cross passes through Dorgu's legs – why he's on the right I've no idea – and Gakpo can't miss from a few yards out, tapping into an empty net. Anfield explodes, and Liverpool have plenty of time to find a winner.

Szboszlai pokes a ball into it for Chiesa ... and Dorgu does enough, blocking the ball behind then, when the corner comes in, a touch from Sesko sends the ball out for another corner.
