BARNES DOUBLE DELIVERS BIG BLOW TO MAN CITY TITLE CHARGE
A second half Harvey Barnes brace inspired Newcastle to a memorable 2-1 win against Manchester City, who were unable to take the chance to close the gap on league leaders Arsenal to a point.
After a very entertaining goalless first half, where both sides had huge chances to open the scoring, the deadlock was broken just after the hour mark when Bruno Guimaraes made surging run before laying it off for Barnes, who fired a superb effort from around 25 yards out which beat Gianluigi Donnarumma.
The lead did not last long, as Ruben Dias equalised less than five minutes later after Newcastle were unable to clear their lines, and the centre-back hit a volley which deflected off a defender past Nick Pope.
Barnes restored the Magpies' lead within five minutes, as Guimaraes' header came off the crossbar before falling to the winger, who fired in from close range to send St James' Park into raptures. There was a lengthy VAR check for offside, but the goal eventually stood.
Newcastle defended resiliently to hold on to a rare win against Man City, having previously only won one of their last 35 Premier League meetings against the Citizens. The victory was also Eddie Howe's first over them, having not won any of the previous 18 top-flight encounters.
The result means Newcastle climb up to 14th place, now five points above the relegation zone. Meanwhile, Manchester City remain in third, four points behind Arsenal before their north London derby against Tottenham tomorrow.
Both Newcastle and Manchester City are next in action on Tuesday in the UEFA Champions League, with the Magpies traveling to France to face Marseille and Pep Guardiola's side taking on Bayer Leverkusen at home. You can watch both games will be live on TNT Sports and discovery+.
