Why this Premier League season could see history made as Opta stats reveal extraordinary trend

New England boss Thomas Tuchel has described the Premier League as "very physical and very direct" - and it's so much more besides. The English top flight seems to throw up more and more unthinkable storylines every season in its own inimitable style, and as Opta data shows, the 2024/25 campaign - with just over two months to go - could be set for a remarkable statistical first.

The Premier League could be set to witness a new record this season - and it's a statistic that speaks wholly to the soul of the division.
There have been some astonishing games so far this term amid drama up and down the table, perhaps no more so than Bournemouth's impossible revival in August that saw them come from 2-0 down - with 87 minutes on the clock - to beat Everton.
And what about the Amad Diallo-inspired Manchester United triumphing in the Manchester derby despite being 1-0 down late on?
Or the red-hot Alexander Isak starring as Newcastle United roared back to see off Tottenham Hotspur in January?
There's a theme emerging here, and it's all about comebacks.
As it currently stands, the 2024/25 season is on course to record the most comeback wins in the history of the Premier League.
To date this term - per Opta - there have been 49 comeback wins from 289 games, at a 17% ratio.
And this trend is seemingly no fluke either, with the current record being set last season.
| Season | Games played | Comebacks |
| 2024/25 | 289 | 49 (17%) |
| 2023/24 | 380 | 63 (16.6%) |
| 2012/13 | 380 | 59 (15.5%) |
| 2020/21 | 380 | 57 (15%) |
| 2022/23 | 380 | 57 (15%) |
| 1999/00 | 380 | 47 (12.4%) |
| 2019/20 | 380 | 47 (12.4%) |
| 2003/04 | 380 | 46 (12.1%) |
| 2016/17 | 380 | 46 (12.1%) |
So, with 91 games remaining in the season, just 15 comeback wins (15.4% of games) are needed to break the record.
And which club has turned the tables most in 2024/25 so far? It's a shared award, and may surprise you...
| Club | Comeback wins in 2024/25 |
| Manchester City | 5 |
| Newcastle United | 5 |
| Liverpool | 4 |
| Aston Villa | 4 |
| Brentford | 4 |
| Manchester United | 4 |
| Arsenal | 3 |
| Brighton and Hove Albion | 3 |
| Tottenham Hotspur | 3 |
| Chelsea | 3 |
| Fulham | 3 |

| Goals | 863 | 2.99 (2nd) |
