Bournemouth 1-1 Newcastle United - Late VAR drama denies Cherries as Anthony Gordon cancels out Marcus Tavernier opener

Bournemouth had three Premier League points snatched away in dramatic fashion against Newcastle on Sunday afternoon after Dango Ouattara's would-be winner was ruled out after VAR determined the ball struck the striker's arm before going in. Marcus Tavernier had put The Cherries in front against The Magpies before Anthony Gordon levelled for the visitors.

Bournemouth and Newcastle shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw, in a game that ended with controversy as VAR ruled out a stoppage-time goal for the hosts.
Newcastle started the first half the better side but quickly faded as the hosts found their rhythm. Bournemouth created a flurry of chances as the half went on with their record signing, Evanilson, being denied a dream debut after a strong save from Nick Pope, before Antoine Semenyo rattled the bar from distance.
Bournemouth broke the deadlock late in the first period as Semenyo robbed Joelinton in his own half, before driving into the box and squaring to Marcus Tavernier who applied the simplest of finishes.
The second period started much the same until a raft of Newcastle changes gave the visitors some much-needed momentum.
Off the bench, Harvey Barnes forced the issue for Newcastle by supplying a teasing ball into the Bournemouth box which Anthony Gordon tapped home to equalise.
A series of Neto saves denied The Magpies a late lead before it looked as if Bournemouth had snatched the winner with a Dango Ouattara header.
However, a brief VAR check deemed that the ball had instead come off his arm and to the dismay of the home fans the goal was ruled out.
The draw leaves Bournemouth with two points after two games while Newcastle rise to fifth in the league with four points to their name.

Talking Point – No Solanke, no problem?

The big question mark going into this season for Bouremouth was how they would fill the void left by top goalscorer Dominic Solanke.
In his place, Evanilson made his debut and offered a glimpse of what he can do by battling hard and looking to shoot whenever possible. But perhaps lacked the clinical edge needed to thrive in the Premier League at this stage.
Generally, though, Bournemouth can be pleased with how they played as Semenyo and Tavernier provided plenty of danger down the flanks against a good Newcastle side, showing life is not all doom and gloom without Solanke.
If not for a slice of late VAR controversy the hosts would be celebrating three points but have instead had to settle for one putting a dampener on a positive 125th Anniversary for The Cherries.

Player of the Match – Antoine Semenyo (BOURNEMOUTH)

The Ghanaian winger took some time to get into the game but once he arrived, he was electric. As Bournemouth got a grip on the conteat, he was the hosts' most-dangerous outlet and proved it as he robbed Joelinton before setting up Tavernier for the opening goal.
The 24-year-old continued to be a threat throughout the second half and could have had another assist after Evanilson was close to converting a fierce cross into the Newcastle net.
A dominating attacking performance like that will give Bournemouth fans hope they can still compete without the goals of Solanke.
