Merseyside Police have confirmed that a British man was arrested for attempted murder, dangerous driving and drug offences after a car drove into pedestrians during Liverpool's Premier League title parade on Monday.
An update was given at a press conference on Tuesday afternoon.
Assistant chief constable Jenny Sims confirmed that 11 people remain in hospital for ongoing treatment after the incident.
"They are all in a stable condition and I am pleased to say that they appear to be recovering well," Sims said.
Detective chief superintendent Karen Jaundrill added more information about the man arrested.
"We have arrested a 53-year-old man from West Derby on suspicion of attempted murder, dangerous driving offences and driving whilst unfit through drugs," she said.
"He remains in custody where he is being interviewed."
It was stated in a press briefing held by Merseyside Police late on Monday evening that 27 people had been taken to hospital by ambulance in the aftermath of the incident.
It has since been confirmed that 50 people required hospitalisation.
Of those, two sustained serious injuries, one being a child. A total of 20 further patients were treated at the scene for minor injuries.
The chief fire officer of Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service, Nick Searle, stated that fire engines arrived at the scene within four minutes of the call, and released four people trapped under the vehicle.
Liverpool City Council leader Liam Robinson added: "It has cast a very dark shadow over what had been a joyous day for the city and the finale to a fabulous bank holiday weekend.
"Liverpool is a city that has a proud history of coming together and supporting each other during challenging times. I've no doubt that will again be the case over the coming days and weeks."
Premier League champions Liverpool also issued a statement which read: "Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have been affected by this serious incident.
"We will continue to offer our full support to the emergency services and local authorities who are dealing with this incident."
