It perhaps comes as a surprise to the player, manager and the club that Jadon Sancho remains a Manchester United squad member in the current season, but he has once again been left out of the matchday squad by Erik ten Hag, this time against Brighton. The Dutch manager told TNT Sports that the winger needs to impress to win his place back in the first team.

Erik ten Hag said Jadon Sancho “has to compete for his position” as the Manchester United player was excluded from the squad against Brighton.
Ten Hag had already left Sancho out of contention last weekend, in the club’s first Premier League, a 1-0 victory over Fulham.
That raised questions over the 24-year-old’s future at Old Trafford, as it had previously been suggested by the Dutch manager that their working relationship had been repaired.
However, with Alejandro Garnacho, Marcus Rashford, Antony and Amad Diallo, amongst others, Ten Hag told TNT Sports that it was simply a matter of Sancho needing to earn his spot back.
"He is here but we had some issues,” he said. “I had a choice to make. He has to compete for his position.
“We need in the squad every position double because it’s going to be a long season."

Relations between player and manager broke down last season when Sancho publicly disagreed with Ten Hag over comments regarding his commitment in training, and it appeared there would be no way back for Sancho when he went out on loan to former side Borussia Dortmund for the second half of the campaign.

However, Sancho failed to find a new club ahead of the new season, despite reported interest from Dortmund, Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus, though there remains a week left of the current transfer window.
Inevitably, there are suggestions that Sancho’s failure to appear for United is because the club hopes to keep him injury-free to maximise the chances of finding a buyer or loan club.
