BRENNAN JOHNSON SCORES TWICE AS SPURS SEND SOUTHAMPTON DOWN
Brennan Johnson’s first-half brace and a late penalty from Mathys Tel gave Tottenham Hotspur a 3-1 victory over Southampton, to relegate Saints to the Championship.
Southampton have now become the fastest relegated team in Premier League history with 31 games, breaking the record of 32 games, previously held by Derby County and Huddersfield.
Johnson scored his 10th goal of the season early into the first half, latching on to Djed Spence’s cutback, before smashing the ball into the top corner.
Ivan Juric’s side had struck the post just moments before, but Spurs broke quickly through James Maddison and Johnson was on hand to finish things off.
The Welsh forward scored his and Spurs’ second of the match just before the end of the first half, latching on to Maddison’s flick on and poking the ball past the helpless Aaron Ramsdale.
Lucas Bergvall thought he had netted his first Premier League goal minutes before Johnson’s second, but it was disallowed for offside after a lengthy VAR review.
Ramsdale produced a number of fine saves to keep his side in the match, including two excellent point-blank stops from Cristian Romero.
Southampton battled valiantly throughout the second half, but suffered the same old issues in attack and Spurs were comfortable in defence.
Mateus Fernandes did give Juric's side a lifeline in the 90th minute, latching on to Kamaldeen Sulemana’s cross, before firing past Guglielmo Vicario with an excellent strike.
Any dreams of a late comeback were taken away when Wellington brought down Johnson in the box with seconds to play, with January signing Tel stepping up and scoring his first goal for Spurs from the spot.
Johnson seemed disgruntled he was denied the chance at a first Premier League hat-trick, but Tel was delighted to start his tally for the club.
Ange Postecoglou’s side have now moved up to 13th for the time being and face a huge UEFA Europa League quarter-final tie against Eintracht Frankfurt on Thursday at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, which you can watch LIVE on TNT Sports and discovery+.
Juric’s side face another tough task next weekend against Aston Villa at St. Mary’s.

SOUTHAMPTON RELEGATED TO THE CHAMPIONSHIP
Southampton have become the fastest relegated team in the history of the Premier League, following their 3-1 defeat to Spurs at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Saints have amassed just 10 points from 31 games and have broken Derby and Huddersfield’s record of being relegated after 32 League games.
Brennan Johnson struck twice during the first half to put Spurs 2-0 ahead at the break and it could have been worse, with Lucas Bergvall’s first Premier League goal ruled out after a lengthy VAR check.
Mateus Fernandes pulled a goal back late on, latching on to Kamaldeen Sulemana’s cross, before firing past Guglielmo Vicario, but Southampton left themselves too little time to mount a full comeback.
Mathys Tel made it 3-1, converting from the spot after Johnson was brought down by Wellington.
Ivan Juric took over from Russell Martin in December after Martin’s side were beaten 5-0 by Spurs at St. Mary’s, but Juric could only amass one victory, which came against Ipswich in February.
Although Southampton are now relegated, it is important they pick up two points in their final seven games to avoid breaking Derby’s record of the lowest points tally in Premier League history.
It has been a sorry season for Saints supporters, capped off with yet another miserable afternoon in north London.
