SALAH HAS A SIGHTER
Salah tries a trademark left-footed curler from around 20 yards out, but this one fizzes over.

ALMOST 2-0
Jota tees up Szoboszlai at the top of the box and his first-time, curling effort looks to be heading in - but flies just wide of the far post.
It would have been a lovely finish, were it a few inches to the right, from a player in fine form.

IMPRESSIVE REDS DEFENDING
Liverpool do well to get bodies back and prevent a Newcastle counter-attack from leading to a chance.
After they clear, Pope kicks the ball into Salah, but is glad to see it bounce out for a goal kick before Salah can catch up.

BIG CHANCE FOR NEWCASTLE
Wilson gets the jump on Konate, latches onto a ball over the top and is through, though with the ball bouncing it's awkward to place and Wilson slices wide.

TSIMIKAS OFF-TARGET
Diaz goes on a driving run from midfield all the way to the byline and picks out Tsimikas with a backheel, but on his week foot the Greek lashes wide.

OPENING FOR NEWCASTLE
Gordon comes over to the right and finds a pocket of space. From there he cuts into the box and crosses low, where Konate meets the ball to stop a shot being possible.
A few seconds later, a free-kick goes Liverpool's way in midfield but is blown just before Jota poked the ball away and seemed as though he could be through on goal - so a break for the visitors.

HALL BAILS OUT NEWCASTLE
Jota and Diaz combine to spring a counter-attack and the former seeks to pick out Salah at the back post, but Hall gets his body in the way and the ball ricochets kindly for Newcastle.

ALEXANDER-ARNOLD PINGING THE BALL AROUND
This time he picks out Salah on the right wing. An earlier crossfield pass switch the play to Diaz expertly. With Newcastle sitting back, Alexander-Arnold has plenty of time to pick these passes.

He races through on goal regardless, with the flag staying down, but dinks wide.

GOAL! LIVERPOOL 1-0 NEWCASTLE (SZOBOSZLAI)
Diaz gets the ball on the left and in space. He drives into the box as Newcastle defenders back off, then picks out Szoboszlai with a cutback, and the Hungarian applies a first-time finish past Pope.
That was both quick and has been coming.

NEWCASTLE COUNTER-ATTACK
Tonali wins the ball and starts a Newcastle counter-attack, though somewhat overhits his pass to Murphy. The winger is unable to wrap his foot around the ball as a result and crosses straight over Alisson's head. Goal kick.

NEWCASTLE PINNED BACK
Livramento makes a good tackle to stop Tsimikas in his tracks, but it's been all Liverpool thus far.

PENALTY APPEAL
Salah takes a tumble over a prone Hall and Liverpool want a penalty - but instead it's a Newcastle free-kick. The referee judges that Salah fouled Hall, and he did have an arm on the defender's back. How much force was behind it, only he and Hall know.
